( Dallas Junior High School girls’ basketball team defeated Lake- Lehman 35-24 last Thursday to advance to a playoff against GAR last Saturday for the overall junior high girls Division 2 title in District II of the Wyoming Valley Confer- ence. In Saturday’s game, played at Meyers High School, the Dallas 29-27. Jennifer Besecker led the young Mountaineers in scoring with 12 points in Saturday’s game with G.A.R. She was also the leading rebounder in the game. Jennifer Vloedman put in seven points and Laura Poynton added six. “Poynton did not score a lot of points in Saturday’s game,” said Coach Tom Kilduff, but she made some key shots when we needed them. “She is what you call a team leader, great at ball handling, going for assists or scoring. Whenever we need points we go to Poynton because she will make them or get the ball to the girl who is in the position to make them.” Both teams played a very aggres- sive game but. Dallas had cold hands in the first half while GAR missed key shots in the second half and fell behind. In the final period, Dallas slowed down the game which kept the scoring down. The win advances Dallas to a game with Nanticoke Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. for the overall District II title. Nanticoke took the Divison I junior high title. In the game with Lake-Lehman, Poynton and Besecker combined for 18 points, nine each to pace the scoring. Dallas took an early lead ending the first period with a five point margin over the Knights. In the second period, the Knights were outscored 8-4 by the Mountaineers who led 16-7 at halftime. The Knights played even basket- ball in the third period but in the final period Dallas’ defense was too overpowering for the Knights and the Mounts outscored them 13-11 to take the 35-24 win. — CHARLOT M.
