DENMON Staff Correspondent Mother and daughter will work side-by-side in the new beauty salon recently opened at 139 Davenport Street, Dallas. After raising three daughters, Jean Gill decided to fulfill her lifelong ambition to become a beau- tician. So three years ago, Jean enrolled in Jerrtyone Beauty School in Pittston, where the school offered both day and night classes making it possible for Jean to attend those which fit into her busy schedule at home. Her older daughter, Brenda, enrolled in the same school at the same time so Jean and Brenda studied side-by-side and also gradu- ated together. After graduation, both mother and daughter took their state exams at the same time and passed them. Jean worked at a beauty salon in Kingston until the owner closed her shop due to illness. It was then Jean decided to open her own beauty salon so after dis- cussing the idea with her husband, Raymond, the project got under- way. Ray renovated the lower level of their nine-room home from a family and recreation area into an up-to- date, modern and attractively designed beauty salon complete with a separate entrance and also plenty of parking area on the Gill property. The location of her salon in the Gill home makes an ideal situation for Jean since she can operate her business and also stay on top of taking care of her home and family including twin daughters, Kim and Kris, students at Dallas Junior High School. The former Jean Gray, Jean is a native of Sweet Valley. Her husband is a native of Courtdale and when Jean and Ray were first married they lived in Courtdale but 22 years ago they purchased and moved into their home on Davenport Street. During those years, the Gills have continuously renovated their home from a small three-room house into the well-designed nine-room struc- ture it is today. In addition to keeping her home and raising three children, Jean had a band ‘Suburban Express” for 15 years. She played the guitar, was lead singer and booked all of their engagements. The band played at weddings, dinner-dances, clubs and made other appearances throughout ) i Beauty shop owner Dallas Post/Charlot M. Denmon the local area and as far away as Black Walnut. According to Jean, the band played in just about every lounge and club in Wyoming Valley. With her newly-opened beauty salon, all of that is behind Jean because she does not have the time. All of her attention is now focused on her lifelong dream — her beauty salon. She and her daughter, Brenda, are enthusiastic about their new venture and Jean said she is more than pleased in the progress it has made since her opening in January. Each week has been busier than the last since she first announced the opening of her shop. She enjoys her work and looks at it as another extra-curricular activity. “I don’t believe I will ever tire of it,”” said Jean. “I enjoy the work and also enjoy meeting so many nice people who come into my shop.” In her leisure time, Jean enjoys relaxing in or by their pool in their backyard. She and Ray also like to go to at least one show annually at the casinos in New Jersey. y 1972 VOLVO 142, auto., AM-FM cassette, leather interior, rear window defroster. Best offer over $500.
