Holthaus « SPearheads team win Dallas Junior High School fresh- man, Rachel Holthaus, led the Wilkes-Barre family YMCA Spin- ners Gymnastics to a season-open- ing win over the Pocono Family YMCA Flipettes in East Strouds- burg on Saturday. Holthaus scored a team-leading 27.8 total points and won first-place ribbons in the 14 and over class in all four events — Balance beam, Uneven Bars, Vaulting and Floor Exercise — and won the all-around title. The Spinners won the meet 128.9 to 105.6. The home-opener for the team will be Sunday, Feb. 2, against Wayne County YMCA at the Wilkes- Barre Jewish Community Center. Two Harey’s Lake residents also competed for the Wilkes-Barre squad last wekend, Jennifer Birt and Michelle Sandstrum. The team is coached by Dallas residents Amy Stortz and Colleen Morda, who were (¢ both injured in a car accident = ennoute to the meet. Neither were seriously hurt although both did not attend the event. These skills, based on the President's Council on Physical Fitness, include a 600 yard run, 50 yard dash, timed sit-ups, flexed arm hang, standing jump and shuttle run.- The skills test speed, endurance, strength and agility. In order to win an award, the students must have scores ranging 80 percent or above in all six skill areas. Former Phillies pitcher speaks for Easter Seals He made “Ya gotta believe!” a rallying cry for victory and always let the human side show when on the pitcher’s mound. Now, 41-year old Tug McGraw is speaking up for the rights of the physically and developmentally disabled as the 1986 Honorary State Chairman for the Pennsylvania Easter Seal Society. McGraw holds the National League’s all-time record for the most innings pitched in relief, and currently is a consultant to the Philadelphia Phillies from whom he retired earlier this year after 10 seasons, following nine with the New York Mets. Now living in Media, PA, with his wife, Phyllis and two children, McGraw is a feature reporter for Philadelphia’s WPVI-TV 6, spokes- man for First Pennsylvania Bank, author, cartoonist and advocate for numerous social concerns, including children’s rights. As Honorary Chairman for the Pennsylvania Easter Seal Society, McGraw will be featured in forth- coming Public Service Announce- ments highlighting the Society’s Spring ‘‘Back-a-Fighter’’ food indus- try plan and “Coffee Day” cam- paign.
