Pallante and the girls do not approve of violence. They do not take sides with either the Sandinis- tas, in control of the government, or the Contra rebels, supported by United States funds. It is this finan- cial support by the United States which is opposed by the student groups. According to Pallante, the move- ment does not oppose United States foreign policy in the Central Amerca region. They believe, how- ever, that the students have the right to voice their opposition to foreign aid for selfish countries. They are opposed to Contra aid because they believe the aid is for selfish purposes and only for inter- ests of the United States. The American students will spend most of their time in Nicaragua with Unviersity of Managua stu- dents and Sandinista government officials. If Miss Naughton has the oppor- tunity to speak with Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega, she said she would probably ask him about the issue of human rights. ‘She said that she does not believe the United States policy in Nicaragua is what it should be but neither does she believe that the Sandinistas are doing all that they should be doing. Naughton also said that she would ask Ortega where the proposed con- stitution on human rights he had discussed with Atty. Joseph Cos- grove of Pittston now stands and whether it will be a just constitution for all people. The 20 students chosen for the upcoming trip to Nicaragua were selected on the basis of achieve- ment, scholarship, student govern- ment and campus ministry partici- pation and formed into a network of opposing government by military. Upon returning to the United States, the students will take part in press work, public education and political action. They will facilitate the flow of information about the effects of U.S. Policy on Nicaragua - Ahhh khdrdd dri ules 4 €Q uring... = SPRIT and GUESS SPORTSWEAR The most concise collection of dresses, sportswear & accessories 544 Spruce St., Scranton Phone 969-9919 NRRRRENE WERE RRER ARERR EE ERR ERE Outstanding Best teachers Shown here following ceremonies held at College Misericor- dia honoring the area's Outstanding Teachers are, from left, Sam Barbose, Dallas Elementary School principal; Doris McCain, and R.
