Buy a full- size 10-speed bicycle as a gift for a one-year boy. Put the child on the seat. Never mind that his feet do not reach the pedals, or that his hands cannot grip the handlebars. Now let him take it for a ride. Ridiculous? Of course it is. It is perfectly obvious that a full-size bike is not an appropriate gift for a one-year-old child. But the appropri- ateness of a gift is not always apparent. If the age of the child is within a couple of years of the recommended age for the toy there is a tendency to ignore the recom- mendation because the child will grow into the toy, the child is big for his or her age and will be able to handle it, or the child is very advanced for his or her age.
