12 ( By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Correspondent After being outplayed for the first 26 minutes of the game, Dallas Senior High girls’ basketball team got its act together to overcome a Montrose eight point lead and defeat the Meteors, 50-47, in the first round of the Tunkhannock Kiwanis Basketball Tournament. Karen Vloedman led the Lady Mountaineers in scoring collecting 18 points, 14 of them in the second half. She also pulled down 15 rebounds. Angie Kern scored 11 points, seven of them in the final period and Joann Cook had 13 points, two of them foul points which were crucial in giving the Mountaineers lead in the final quarter which they never relinquished. Coach Kit Karuza attributed his girls win to their shooting at the foul line. The Mountaineers made 11 of their final 13 foul shots. Vloedman, Kern and Cook made shots from the line that made the difference in the score during the final six minutes of the game. The Dallas girls had 18 for 32 from the line for the night. During the first half of the game, it was Montrose turnovers that kept Dallas in the game. Lori Broken- shire and Angie Kern had foul trouble in the first half, Kern called for three and Brokenshire for two. The playing of the Lady Mountaineers against Montrose showed that they are an aggressive team. The first six or seven starters are outstanding on the foul line. Kern shot 70 percent from the foul line against Montrose and Cook in a natural at the line. Coach Karuza was disappointed with his team’s rebounding in Saturday night’s game. He said they were off and they knew that they were. He was pleased, however, that after a bad 26 minutes, they were able to regroup and come back to win. The win advances them to the final round with Tunkhannock, Monday, 8 p.m. for the tournament championship. In Thursday night’s game with Montrose, Lake- Lehman Coach Joe Martini’s young Black Knights showed little concern for inexperience and played a tough defense that prevented the Meteors from pour- ing in points. Pam Coolbaugh set the pace for Montrose with 13 points, tossing in seven from the charity stripe. Janine Kasarda and Carolyn James scored 10 points. Kasarda scored all of hers from the field while James put in eight points from the floor and two from the free stripe. The Knights Debbie Levi and Cheryl Mushala played an aggressive defense causing numerous Montrose turnovers which made the difference in the score. Lake-Lehman took an 8-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and jumped in front 23-13 at the end of the first half. Their defense stopped the Meteors from coming within six points the remainder of the game. Montrose’s Jill Blachek was high scorer for the Montrose girls in both the Lake-Lehman and Dallas games. In the Lake-Lehman game she scored 14 points. In the Dallas game she scored 21 and Pierce had 15 points.
