Lake-Lehman High School’s Girls
Basketball Coach Joe Martini has
been working tirelessly with this
year’s candidates in an effort to
have things fall into place before
the pre-season games.
“Originally, I had 30 girls come
out for the team but after the first
week or two, that number decreased
to 21 members, ”” said Coach Mar-
tini. “We lost all of our starters
from last season through graduation
and we have no returning letterwin-
ners.”
That’s what makes it tough for
the Lake-Lehman coach this season.
He has a good mixture of juniors,
sophomores, and freshmen but with
the exception of two or three, none
of them have any great amount of
varsity playing time. Those few who
did, never had much to add up to
giving them the experience they

with guns
The success of the U.S. Olympic
Shooting Team during the 1984
Olympics increased interest among
young people in shooting sports. As
a result, guns have become a popu-
lar Christmas item.
Training programs, brochures,
books, and the parents personal
involvement are all effective ways
of educating the junior shooter.

PLAYOFFS: With the top three
teams entering, will be held on
March 19 with the winners of those
games squaring off for the champi-
onship on March 24.
Game times are 6:30, 7:30 and
8:30 p.m. and are played at the
Lake-Noxen Elementary School
gymnasium.
For the past several seasons,
Martini has been fortunate enough
fo have a lot of depth in talent. He
had girls who played together since
about eighth grade. This meant
other girls out for the team knew
they didn’t stand much chance of
getting a lot of playing time, so
probably didn’t work as hard as
they might otherwise.
“These kids I have this year are
young and inexperienced but they
have a good attitude and they have
talent,”” said Martini. ‘‘But it’s
going to take a lot of hard work
from the coach’s side and their side.
They have been improving with
each practice.”
Martini said that the improve-
ment will have to come through
practice and through their games.
They will take the games one at a
time and hope to be competitive by
the second half of the seson.
The Lake-Lehman team this year
is probably the tallest Martini had
ever coached at Lake-Lehman and
he believes the girls will be good
down the road.
He has senior Cheryl Mushala,
who will probably start at center,
and juniors Janine Kasarda, Diane
Jachimowicz and Debbie Levi will
probably be ready to start, as will
sophomore Pam Coolbaugh. He also
has five freshmen and sophomores
he hopes to have ready to back up
the first five.
“If their attitude continues to be
good and they work hard-if we play
and work and learn from out mis-
takes, we’ll look for our opportuni-
ties to pull off some unexpected
upsets,” Martin said. ‘On any given
night, a lesser team can take a
predicted leader.”
Martini told us when he looks at
his freshmen out for the team, he
sees the potential to have nine or 10
deep of outstanding talent, if they
want to work at it. That’s what it is
going to take work according to
Martini.
The Lady Knights will have their
first opportunity to show what they
can do next week when they play
Montrose at home. After that, they
will enter the Bishop O'Reilly Tour-
nament, then travel to Hazleton. It’s
possible they will play Hazleton
twice, since Hazleton will also be in
the O’Reilly Tournament.
