Solid fuel burning devices: 1. Check with local fire and building codes for proper clearance and requirements before installation of heating units and chimneys. 2. Check chimneys periodically for build up of creosote and have your chimney professionally cleaned at least once a heating season. 3. Never use papers or gasoline to start a wood burning stove - Kkin- dling works best. 4. Most effective fuels are seasoned hardwoods usch as oak, maple, elm and birch. Electric Space Heaters: 1. Be ue your heater is U.L. listed and ade- quate wiring and outlets are availa- ble. 2. Keep at least three feet of space around heater. 3. Look for heaters with thermostat control that shuts off when overheated and a tip- over switch that turns off the heater if it should tip over. Kerosene Heaters: 1. Once again be sure your heater is U.L. Listed. 2. Use only water-clear kerosene - never use gasoline. 3. Only refuel heaters outside and never store flammable liquids indoors. 4. Make sure of proper ventilation in rooms being heated by kerosene heaters. 5. Maintain at least a three foot clear- ance around heater. For the past several years national statics have shown a dras- tic increase in fire losses caused by supplmental heating devices. Unfor- tunately this trend can also be seen here in Kingston Township with most fires handled by the two Town- ship Fire departments during the cold season, being caused by supple- mental heating devices. However, with your help, we hope to reverse this trend and make Kingston Town- ship a safer place to live.
