Hmm, unusual...Only a small minority of people can honestly say they have not heard of NBC’s hit show. The effects and influence are everywhere, from clothing including T-shirts to celebrations of “Miami Vice’ similar to the one held recently at the local Woodlands. Why is this show so popular, especially with the younger set of TV viewers? The actors who por- tray Tubbs and Crockett, Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson, are somewhat appealing, and the plots range from average to above average. The producers of the show are many, Michael Mann, exec. prod.; Ed Waters, supv. prod.; Liam O’Brien, consult. prod.; Ricahrd Brams, co-prod.; John Nicolella, Mel Swopes and George E. Crosby, prod. Their talents have certainly been recognized as ‘‘Miami Vice” won the People’s Choice Award for FAvorite New Television Dramatic program, and was also applauded by the editors of TV GUIDE maga- zine ‘as the Best-Looking New Series. Part of the program’s suc- cess can be attributed to the trend- setting styles; in fact, Philip Michael Thomas (‘‘Tubbs’’) just recently started his own line of fashion designs. However, the chief strength of “Miami Vice” lies in its unique integration of pop music into the action format of the series. On the basis of this, the creators of the hit program not only want to maintain, but enhance its TV viewing audi- ence. They hope to feature new songs by popular artists as Eric Clapton, Glenn Frey, an Chaka Khan during the 1985-86 season. Not only that but severasl musicians, such as Phil Collins and former J. Giels Band vocalist Peter Wolf, have even entertained the idea of making guest appearances on the series. In fact, a record album of music derived from ‘Miami Vice” has even been released on the market. Continuing in the limelight, “Miami Vice” garnered the most Emmy nominations of any series with 15, giving NBC the highest network total with 125. “Vice” was nominated as outstanding dramatic series, Don Johnson (Detective Sonny Crockett) as lead actor in a drama series, and Edward James Olmos (Lieutentant Martin Castillo) as best supporting actor. Paul Michael Glaser and Lee H. Katzin ‘were nominated for outstanding directing in a drama series, and Anthony Yerkovich for outstanding writing. The show also won two nominations for cinematography, film editing, and film sound editing, among art direction, music compos- ition, and costume design nominees. “Miami Vice”, often referred to Host family IS sought The Dallas Chapter of AFS, American Field Service, is cur- rently looking for a host family in the Back Mountain area to house a foreign exchange student from Dec. 15 to the end of the school year.
