By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Correspondent Lake-Lehman board members, administrators and coaches are pleased with the successful season of their football and soccer teams, which has dispelled the concerns some persons had prior to the school board’s approval of including soccer in the high school sports program. Prior to the board approval before the start of the 1985-86 school year, Athletic Director Rodger Bearde was asked by the board to do a survey of schools who had both soccer and football programs to determine whether or not one program interfered with the other. Bearde sent out a questionnaire to 40 schools in Pennsylvania, comparable in enrollment to Lake- Lehman, which had football and soccer programs. One of the questions asked was whether introducing the soccer program affected the football program in the high school. All but two schools answered ‘no’. Some did say that other programs were affected to a degree, programs such as cross country and band. Based on the favorable replies received, the board approved the program which was coached this season by Ray Dennis and James Welby. Bearde’s concern was whether there would be enough candidates come out for the sport since with the enrollment at Lake-Lehman, 14 sports programs could be too many. He did believe, however, that soccer was a sport that would provide extra-curricular activity for those students not interested in football or not qualified physically. Bearde’s opinion was correct since. 22 candidates came out and stayed with this season’s soccer team and the football team also had more candidates out than in the past few seasons. “I believe the success of both teams this season, as well as the success of our cross country team (cross- country team took its division) proves the programs do not affect one another,” said Bearde. ‘“There is no seeing into the future; those decisions are made when the time comes. This year everyone has been very supportive of both programs.” High School principal Jay Zaleskas admitted that he was skeptical at the beginning of the program as to whether or not there would be enough students showing interest in the soccer program. “I went to some of the games,” said Zaleskas, ‘‘and I went to the District playoffs and I was impressed with Lake-Lehman’s performance. This year’s team has left a good taste in everybody’s mouth.” Zaleskas said when the need for the program was evidenced by the youngsters, who became involved, his skepticism disappeared.
