The Dallas Mountaineers continue undefeated in
Division II of the Wyoming Valley Football Conference
after defeating G.A.R., 12-7 Saturday afternoon at the
Mountainers Stadium before a large homecoming
crowd.
The Grenadiers, who outplayed the Mountaineers
throughout the entire first half, were leading 7-6 with
only 1:45 remaining in the game. After Gerry Mihal-
ick’s field goal kick was blocked by Greg Skrepenak in
the fourth quarter, many of the fans decided to get out
of the rain and were leaving the stadium.
Their departure was just minutes too soon because
after a change of possessions, the Grenadiers took
over with only two minutes left on the clock. Quarter-
Mountaineers were not giving up that easily and a hit
by Dallas’ Dan Williams on Snyder forced GAR to
punt the ball.
Ryan Holthaus blocked the Grenadier’s punt and
Rich Long picked up the loose ball and went 35 yards
for a Dallas touchdown to give the Mountainers a 12-7
lead. Tim Lyons tried for a two-point pass to Long but
it was incomplete.
The Mountaineers were outplayed throughout the
first half by a big and strong Grenadier team. Playing
without three of their starters, the Grenadiers closed
down the Dallas running attack in the first half,
holding them to only 25 yards on offense. Andy Macko
and Skrepenak broke through to the Mountaineers’

prognosticators all picked up six
wins to just one loss last week,
continuing the three-way tie for first
place. Ed Campbell, Charlot

recovered a Dallas fumble that set up GAR’s touch-
down in the opening of the second quarter.
On the Grenadiers first play after the fumble,
Snyder hit Dave Hutchinson with a 31-yard pass for a
touchdown. Maeko’s kick was good and GAR went in
front 7-0, with 11:03 on the clock.
In the second half, Mountaineer Ryan Holthaus
paced teammates Ron Ostrowski and Steve Brace in
rushing and carrying the ball. Holthaus did some good
blocking to set up a series of plays for the Mountai-
neers that took the ball down to the 11-yard line from
where Brace took it in for a score. Gerry Mihalick’s
kick for the PAT was blocked by Skrepenak and the
Mounts came within one point striking distance of the
Grenadiers.
In the fourth quarter, Dallas moved the ball to the
27-yard line close enough for Mihalick to try for a field

which was grabbed by Rich Long, who carried it 31
yards for the winning touchdown. The try for extra
points failed, but it made no difference as Dallas held
on for the closing seconds and a big win.
The Mountaineers, who have proven they can come
from behind to win, have a.big game coming up this
Friday night when they meet Nanticoke at the Trojans
Stadium. Nanticoke is the team they have to beat to
take the Division II title.
