Dining at Piledggi’s
is well worth the trip
By CHARLOT M. DENMON
Staff Correspondent
Back Mountain residents who have had the opportunity to dine at
Piledggi’s Restaurant, 199 Division St., Kingston, usually return time
and time again to enjoy the wide variety of entrees offered by the
family-owned and managed Italian-American Restaurant.
Specializing in Italian Cuisine, Piledggi’s also offers an extensive
menu of steaks, chops, veal, seafood, poultry and salads. For more
than 50 years, the restaurant has continued as a family operation
with all soups, salad dressings, sauces, pastas and most desserts
made daily on the premises. :
Dominic Piledggi, an Italian immigrant, opened the restaurant in
1933 with his wife, Mary. It was in the height of the depression that
Dominic closed his produce business and opened a small bar and
restaurant on Zerby Avenue in Edwardsville.
His new business became so successful that a year later, he built a
larger building at 199 Division St., Kingston, where Piledggi’s has
continued to do business since 1934.
Dominic’s sons, Tony and Tommy, and his daughter, Betty,
initiated a family tradition of good food and service, which is still
carried on today. Betty supervises the kitchen, overseeing the
preparation of the food and takes pride in personally preparing the
homemade soups, sauces, and most of the pasta and Italian dishes.
Complete family involvement is the primary factor in the success of
Piledggi’s Italian-American Restaurant.
Bill McGough, Jr. and Budd O’Malia now oversee the operation of
the restaurant which is divided into two areas, the bar and lounge
area separated from the main diningroom by a foliage-covered
divider, which combined accommodates approximately 167 people.
There is also additional seating at the bar.
All food is prepared to the diner’s liking so patrons are advised to
be patient. No one has to wait an unusual length of time but diners
may enjoy a leisurely cocktail or conversation while waiting for their
dinner. ;
While all entrees are prepared with the diner in mind, there are
some that are special favorites with Piledggi’s regular customers.
Rack of lamb, a specialty of the house, is prepared to taste and is so
tender it melts in your mouth. Passan steak, a Piledggi original, is a
20-ounce sirloin prepared with a special sauce. Chateaubriand is a
filet mignon dinner for two, complete with choice of vegetable, potato
and salad. Cornish hen is a favorite on the menu and an entree that is
not found on the menu of most restaurants. Veal is a tradition at
Piledggi’s and is prepared in any way the customer prefers it.
All items are available for takeout for those persons who prefer to
dine in their own home or are unable to get out.
The large diningroom with lightwood booths and tables, accented
by light upholstery and moss green wall-to-wall carpeting features
large wall murals and paintings lending a cheerful and relaxing
atomosphere for diners after the rush of a busy day. Waitresses,
many of them employed at Piledggi’s for several decades, give
prompt and friendly service.
A complete-stocked bar of spirits, wines and beers to go with your
dinner is well-known at Piledggi’s and no dinner is complete without
trying one of the house specialties-a blended ' fresh fruit cream
daiquiri.
Open for dinner, Monday through Saturday, from ‘4:30 p.m. to
midnight, Piledggi’s feature evening specials every Monday through
Thursday. These include entrees not on the regular menu such as
veal, seafood combinations, fettucini, red snapper and special steak
dinners, specialties of the chef, who attended the culinary institute.
Piledggi’s also serve lunch, Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 2
p.m., featuring homemade soups, sandwiches and hot entrees.
For an enjoyable dining experience, stop in to visit the Piledggi
family’s Italian-American Restaurant where there is plenty of free
parking and casual dress is welcomed. Bring the family and let the
children order from their own menu. All major credit cards are
accepted but reservations are recommended so there will be no
waiting. E
The Piledggi family has been serving the public for more than 50
years and always welcome new friends. For par excellence in
service, food and friendliness, we suggest that you stop in.
