Dallas Lady Mountaineers
defeated the Lake-Lehman Lady
Knights, 4-3, Friday afternoon in a
game played at the Lady Knights’
field.
Linda King’s two goals and her
one assist set the pace for the
Dallas girls win. The Lady Mountai-
neers put the first score on the
board when Maureen Wisnieski
assisted by King, scored at 4:05 into
the first half.
Lake-Lehman tied the score at 1-1
on Kelly Wandel shot to S. Slocum
who took it in for the score.
King was not to be denied a
Dallas win and at 10:02 into the half
she scored on an assist by Sue Wells
to give Dallas a 2-1 lead going into
the second half.
In the second half, King scored at
3:15 into the period, again on an
assist by Wells to give Dallas a 3-1
lead. Slocum gave the Knights a
goal unassisted at 5:30 into the half
but Lori Warneka gave Dallas a 4-2
lead at 7;20 into the half.
The Lady Knights refused to give
up and at 12:00 Sue DeGennaro
scored on Deanna Knorr’s pass. The
Lady Knights stormed the Dallas
goal during the final minutes of the
game but they were unable to get
by Goalkeeper Karen Wall.
Dallas had 12 corners and 11 shots
at goal while the Knights had 15
corner shots and 18 shots on goal
but Dallas made more shots on
corners than the Knights.
In Monday’s game with North-
west, the Lady Mountaineerrs
outdid the Rangers 7-1 paced by
Linda King’s three goals and two
assists. King sparked the Dallas
girls to a 6-0 score in the first half
assisting Heidi Scholz on the first
score 6:52 into the period, then
scored herself on an assist from Sue
Wells at 7:00 into the half.
Maureen Wisnieski scored unass-
scored a second goal, this time
unassisted, 13:24 into the half. Lori
Warneka, with an assist from Wells
and King scored, then King scored
her third goal in the half, on an
assist by Shannon Cleary, 29:43 into
the period.
Marcy Davis saved the Rangers
from a shutout when she scored
unassisted 20:25 into the second
half. Shannon Cleary scored the
final goal for the Dallas team, on an
assist from Spellman with less than
five minutes remaining in the game.
Dallas had six corners, the Rang-
ers had nine, but the Dallas girls
had 16 shots at goal, Northwest five.
Karen Wall had five saves for
Dallas. Ranger goalkeeper Jo
Mitchelavage had nine saves.
Lake-Lehman played to a 1-1 tie
with the Lady Mohawks of Meyers
when Mohawk Rochelle Phillips
took a pass from Danielle Olex and
hit a hard drive past Knight goal-
keeper Cindy Slocum at 16:10 into
the second half.
Outstanding defense by Meyers
led by Mary Cronauer and Ann
Marie Kochuba stopped the aggres-
sive offense of the Lady Knights.
Kelly Wandel put the Knights in
the lead 1-0 at 10:35 in the first half
on an assist by Noel Kuznicki.
Kuznicki passed to Wandel, who
took the hit and drove the ball into
the cage past Meyers goalkeeper
Betsy Smith.
It was the young Knights third tie
this season.
Lake-Lehman girls had eight
corner shots and 16 shots at goal.
The Mohawks had four corner shots
and 12 shots at goal. Slocum had
eight saves for theLady Knights,
Smith had seven for the Mohawks.
Dallas junior high field hockey
team ran their record to 5-0 last
week, defeating Wyoming Seminary
11-0, ‘Thursday, and’ Crestwood 3-0,
last Tuesday.
In the Seminary game, left inside
Renee Strauser scored four goals to
show the way to thewin. Right
insider Jennifer Moran and left
outsider Lisa Hite scored three each
“and Wendy Hozempa, who went in
for Strauser, scored one, to give the
young Mounts their 11-0 shutout.
Meg Kozemchak played outstand-
ing defense in the game.
In the earlier game, Monday
afternoon, with Crestwood, goals
were scored by Renee Strauser,
right insider Jennifer Moran and
the third and final goal of the
contest by Strauser, who chalked up
six goals for the week of play. Right
wingback Marcella Bove showed
excellent defensive stick work in the
3-0 win by the young Lady Mounts.
In the jayvee contests, the Dallas
girls defeated Seminary 3-0 and
Crestwood 2-0.

nary game and right insider Becky
Lewis scored one. Rightlink Melanie
Langdon and left outside Gretchen
Schuler showed good stick work on
offesne.

scored both goals in the Crestwood
game with left inside on the forward
line, Tina Hite, playing outstanding
offense.

performances of their young play-
ers.
Coach Ed Narkiewicz’ Black
Knight runners upped their record
to 11-2 Thursday afternoon by
defeating Dallas, 19-37, and Wyo-
ming Area, 16-43, at the Warriors’
course.
The Mountaineers Mark Wright
finished first in 16:31 but the Lake-
Lehman Knights took the next four
spots to down their competition.
Dana Henninger came in second
with 16:37, Dave Radomski took
thrid in 16:44, Bryan Powell, cap-
tured fourth in 16:49 and Bob Cas-
tellani finished fifth in 16:55.
The Mountaineers were able to
top the Warriors by a close 27-28.
The Warriors Len Hromek was top
finisher for Wyoming with sixth
came in seventh in 17:13 and Wyo-
ming’s Mark LaPorte came in
eighth in 17:20.
Warrior Joe Zanta took ninth posi-
tion with a time of 17:21 and Moun-
taineer Walt Lasecki gave Dallas
10th spot in 17:42. Joe Boos was hot
on his teammate’s heels with a time
of 17:43 and Charles Leaf finished 12
for Dallas with a time of 17:56.
~ Lake-Lehman’s Mike Schall took
Weaver came in 14th in 1807 and
Mountaineer John Burke finished
15th in 18:17.
Dallas runner Mark Wright led all
runners with a time of 18:18 over
the Mountaineers 3.2 mile course in
last Monday’s tri-meet with Meyers
and Coughlin.
Wright’s first place finish helped
Dallas edge out Coughlin 26-29 but
the Meyers Mohawks nipped Dallas
27-28 due to the Mohawks Jim
Harris taking fourth spot and their
Bob McFadden finishing fifth.
Although Dallas defeated Cough-
lin, the Crusaders in turn took the
Mohawks 27-32 in their meet.

In the girls meet, Meyers swept
the tri-contest with Dallas and
Coughlin and Coughlin defeated
Dallas by forfeit.
Erin Friar had the fastest time
for the Mountaineers coming in
third with a time of 25:02.

Chasing the foe

Coach John McCafferty’s Dallas
High School soccer team shut out
the Wyoming Valley West Spartans,
7-0, Tuesday afternoon at the West
Side school’s stadium. Mountaineer
goaltender Gerry Mihalick had four
saves to preserve the shutout for the
Dallas team in the contest.
Neither team scored in the first
quarter until Matt Conologue gave
the Mountaineers their first point on
a penalty kick 17:37 into the period.
Following the end of the first
quarter, the Dallas squad broke
loose scoring two goals in the
second quarter, three in the third
and a final goal in the fourth period.
Wally Gauthier scored first at
1:17 into the second quarter on a
direct kick outside the area unass-
isted, and John Tinner scored the
second goal at 6:23 into the second
period.
At 10:11 into the third period Matt
Lipo scored, unassisted and Jim
Lister scored two goals, one at 18:35
into the period, unassisted and the
second one, with an assist by Brent
Snowdon, at 19:20 into the quarter.
Mike Richards scored the seventh
and final goal into the fourth period
without an assist.
The Mountaineers had 24 shots on
goal, the Spartans seven. Dallas had
eight corners, Valley West only one.
Mihalick had four saves, the Spar-
tans Petrosky had 13.
Lake-Lehman Knights defeated
both Bishop Hoban and Bishop
Hafey last week to up their record
to 7-4.
The Argents played the Knights to
a 2-2 tie in the first half, but the
Knights picked up two goals in the
third quarter and one in the fourth
to take home a 5-3 win.
Chris Scharff led the Knights with
three goals. G. Mahalak scored
unassisted at 18;47 into the first
period for Hoban. In the second
quarter, Matt Reinert scored unass-
isted at 4:41 into the period then
Mahalak scored again for Hoban on
a penalty kick at 9:57. Scharff, on
an assist by A. Davis, gave the
Knights a goal. He scored again at
1:48 into the third period and Mike
Hagman scored at 11:58 to give the
Knights a 4-2 lead. Scharff scored a
third goal at 11:56 into the fourth
period. Ed Bielecki scored at 17:54
for Hoban’s final goal and: the
Knights took home the 5-3 win.
Both teams played a strong
defense with Hoban’s goaltenders
making some outstanding saves.
Knights had 27 shots on goal and
eight corners. Hoban had 10 shots
on goal and four corners.
Coach Ray Dennis Lake-Lehman
Knights defeated Bishop Hafey
soccer players 8-4, Monday after-
noon, at the Bishop Hafey field.
Bishop Hafey took an early 1-0
lead in the first quarter on a goal by
Radzwich but Lake-Lehman’s Chris
Scharff tied it at 1-1 on a score 3:22
into the quarter.
Hafey’s Tito, scored unassisted, to
give his team a 2-1 lead, then scored
a second goal unassisted to give
Bishop Hafey a 3-2 edge going into
the second quarter.
Ozvind Undheim scored, unass-
isted in the second quarter to tie it
at 3-3 but Hafey’s Neaman came
through with an unassisted lead to
take his team back in the lead 4-3.
Before the period ended Rich Parry
scored unasssited to tie the score at
4-4 going into the second half.
In the third quarter, Parry with
an assist from Hagman shot the
winning goal at 4:00 into the period,
then Hagman made it 6-4 on a goal,
assisted by Scott Sesen, at 17:00 into
the quarter.
The Knights made the final score
8-4 in the fourth quarter on two
goals by Scharff, one with an assist
by Sesen, 8:00 into the period and
the second, with an assist by
Hagman, 17:30 into the quarter.
U-10 DIVISION
Muddy rain-soaked fields combind
with puddle hazards to make this
first October, Saturday a rough one
for the U-10 Division. The Rowdies
emerged victorious over the Fury in
the first game 3-2. First quarter
scoring for the Rowdies was done
by Brad Barket, and then Ben
Brown, with an assist by Brod
Barket. Eddie Thomas punched the
third goal in the second quarter.
The Fury’s Rich Klick assisted by
Nick Sabatini put that team on the
scoreboard in the third quarter and
a penalty kick goal by Darin Dixon
showed some promise for the Furty,
but they never did catch up. The
Rowdies Mike Heffron also played
an outstanding game.
The Strikers squeezed out a 3-2
victory over the Sockers but it was
a heavy footed defensive game, with
the sodden field making play slow
and arduous. Scoring didn’t occur
until the third quarter when the
Sockers’ Jared Baranowski scored.
The Strikers’ Mike Vozniak made
two goals with great assists by Ken
Chapple and then Mike Vozniak
scored again on a penalty kick to
bring the Strikers in the lead. Corey
Cherrup of the Sockers made a goal
in the last minute of play, but it was
too late to tie. Both teams boasted
tenacious goalie action and Ryan
Finn of the Strikers maintained
outstanding defensive play through-
out the game.
The Cosmos shut out the Rough-
necks 5-0 in the afternoon, with the
Cosmos goalie Gary Farber keeping
the opponent at bay. Jeff Kunkle
scored twice as did Sean Callaghan
and Danny Moses made 1 goal.
For the final game of the day, the
Kicks edged the Sting 2-1. Robert
Kane scored both goals for the
Kicks while Tom Onzik excelled on
defense “for that team. Mike
Petruska made the Sting’s lone
goal.

U-12 DIVISION
In spite of muddy field conditions
most U-12 games were played as
scheduled on Saturday.
In one of the most heated contests
of the day the Arrows battled the
division leading Chargers to a 4-4
tie. The Chargers jumped ahead
first with a goal from Jim Reynolds.
Brian Miller answered back for the
Arrows off a pass from Amy Try-
noski. The Chargers took charge
with two goals from David Fisher
and one from Matt Sleightholm in
the second quarter. The third
quarter saw the Arrows Mike
Wagner score two goals, one on a
penalty kick. Bobby Casterline also
connected on a penalty shot which
tied the score. The last quarter was
a tense defensive battle with both
teams remaining scoreless.
The Arrows defense was led by
the outstanding play of the full-
backs. Clive Lankwarden, Bobby
Reilly, and Dave Larkins. Also
important on Arrows defense were
Emily Russin, Eric Rhoads,
Gretchen Dershimer, David Wojcie-
chowski and John Presper.
In oher games the Strikers battled
back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the
Sockers 8-7. The Sockers got off to
an early lead and maintained it
throughout three quarters of the
game, but the Strikers pulled out
the win when they exploded in the
last quarter, scoring four unan-
swered goals. Nick Melone led the
Sockers scoring with three goals
while Liz Cave, Sean Reynolds, Rob
Jemio and Eric McDonough each
added one. The Strikers got two
goals each from David Knapp, Eric
Lehman and Jeff Malak who scored
the winning shot on a penalty kick.
Robert Scott and Pat Joyce added
one each. David Jackubowski at
center halfback kept the Strikers
offensive drives going while Marcia
Garcia at fullback broke up several
Sockers scoring drives. :
The Kicks looked very tough on
their way to the playoffs as they
rolled over the Sting 5-3. Once again
the front line pressure kept up by
Jason Mattey, Jason Rogers and
John Morris, proved too much for
the other team as Mattey connected
for four with assists from Monique
Matthess, Casey Kernag and
Morris’ powerful corner Kicks.
Jason Rogers pounded in the win-
ning goal off a pass from Matty.
The Sting got their goals from Pee
Wee Geist who scored two and Amy
Madzan who had one. The Kicks
defense was led by Kevin Chapple
and Brenda LaFrance who were
both outstanding at halfback.

U-14 PLAYOFFS
The Chargers and Kicks squared
off in the opening round of the U-14
Playoffs with the Chargers coming
out on top 2 to 1 over the Kicks.
Justin Swain scored early for the
Kicks for the only scoring by either
team in the first half. Second half
action had Aaron Tillman banging
home two goals in the third quarter
leading his team to victory in the
double-elimination = Tourney-Defen-
sive standouts for the Chargers
were goalie Mike Durkin and half-
back Ann Faulls along with goalie
Willy Boyzcuk of the Kicks. The
Kicks now go up against the Fury,
also losers in the first round, on
Saturday, Oct. 12 at Penn State
beginning at 9 a.m.
In a Sunday game, the Sockers
downed the Comets 8 to 1 behind
Kenny Klimovitch and John Bara-
nowski with three goals each and
Brian Hampel’s one goal and three
assists. Also scoring for the Sockers
was Steve Sennett. Comet Mike
Fritzin blasted one thru the net in
the second period.
