iB erie = ] lc | By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Correspondent @ of two of QB Tim Lyons passes to lead in Dallas’ 31-0 win over the West Side Titans, Saturday afternoon, at the Dallas field. Lyons had an outstanding afternoon, throwing for three touchdown passes and completing 12 of 26 attempts for 222 yards. The Mountaineers first score came in the first quarter with 6:59 left on the clock. The Dallas 11 on their first possession took 11 plays, with a series of Lyons passes and Ron Ostrowski carries and several by Rich Holthaus, to get them within striking distance. On the next play, Long went across the middle on the five yard line and took Lyons pass and carried it over for the score. Gerry Mihaliek kicked the first of four extra points in the game to give Dallas a 7-0 lead. West Side Tech took the Dallas punt on their own 31- yard line, but their offense was unable to move the ball against the strong Dallas defense and on fourth and seven, they punted. On their first return play, Mount Ed Kwak was hit with Lyons 55-yard throw and took it in for a score with 5:04 on the clock. Mihalick kicked his second PAT of thegame and the Mountaineers led 14-0 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Titans played strong defense to stop the Mountaineers on a drive downfield and Mihalick came in to try for a field goal. The Mountaineers failed to score when Tital lineman blocked the kick. On the next Dallas possession, Lyons kept to the air and the Titans had two perfect opportunities to intercept the Dallas quarterback’s passes but each time they dropped them. With only 1:29 remaining in the half, on second and 10, Lyons hit Long with a 29- yard pass which Long took into the end zone for his second score in the game. Mihalick kicked the extra point and Dallas went in front 21-0. In the third quarter, the Mountaineers continued to outplay the Titans and scored their final points of the game. Lyons led the Dallas offense down field but when they were stopped near the goal line, Mihalick came in on fourth down and kicked a 27-yard field goal to move the Dallas score to 24-0. Ostrowski, who with Holthaus and John Harris, did most of the rushing for the day, carried the ball into the end zone fromthe five yard line for a fourth Mountaineer touchdown. Mihalick kicked the extra point to give his team a 31-0 lead which is the way the game started. In the fourth period, Coach Ted Jackson substituted with his younger players giving his varsity a rest. “We played everyone in the fourth quarter,” said Coach Jackson. ‘We didn’t play Lyons at all. “Our kids played well in general — very well on offense, but they could have done better on defense. Our passing was better, but our running was not. Part of that is a credit to West Side Tech. They were strong and aggressive, they played good defense against the run.” The Mountaineers play Wyoming Area this Friday, 8 p-m., at Wyoming. “They’re big and strong, they have great receivers game. They’re tough but we’ll be there to play,” said Jackson. By JOHN F. KILDUFF Staff Writer Coach Rich Gorgone took a chance Saturday afternoon against the Divi- sion IT Meyers Mohawks. Lehman, a Division III team in the Wyoming Valley Football Con- ference, had not beaten the Wilkes- Barre team since the early 1970’s. It was time to show that a Division III team could play with a long-time contender of Division II football. With the score of the contest glaring off the scoreboard “HOME TEAM 13, GUESTS 14,” Gorgone opted for a two-point conversion and the lead in the game with just over eight minutes remaining in the third stanza. Lake Lehman takes the lead 15 - 14 with 8:37 remaining in the third period. Photos, page 14 Senior Jetf Martin earned the cheers of his teammates as he plowed over right tackle for two of his 97 yards on the day. Lake Lehman’s defense ruled the roost for the remainder of the game and Gorgone marched of the field with his fourth victory this season against only two losses. The victory, although a non-con- ference game, helped prepare the Black Knights for their upcoming game this Saturday against Division II foe Nanticoke Trojans. The Mohawks opened Saturday’s scoring with an impressive 80 yard driving on their first offensive pos- session. Relying mainly on the running of junior tailback Raghib Ismail, Meyers marched to within 15 yards of the Lehman goaline. On a second and four call, Ismail took the han- doff from quarterback Gene Maffei and rammbled the remaining 15 yard for a 7-0 Mohawk lead. Most of the first quarter was spent with both offenses sputtering around mid-field. However, with time running out in the first quarter and the Mohawks in possession at their own eight yard line, Ismail mishandled a handoff and Lehman’s junior defensive end Scott Shultz pounced on the ball. The Black Knights were in business at the start of the second period with a first and goal to go. On second down, from the Meyers 13 yard line, quarterback Len Annetta found split-end Chris Land- messer alone in the corner of the endzone for the tying tally with 10:50 remaining in the half. With the game tied at 7-7 follow- ing the Annetta-Landmesser TD, the Mohawks took the ensuing kick-off and returned the ball to their own 37 yardline. Meyers alternated running plays between Ismail and senior Marc Minichello before Minichello capped the impressive 13-play drive with a three yard burst to give the Mohawks a 14-7 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. Be SN Dallas Post/Ed Campbell The Public Since 1887 GoalPOST Petie, who has either been in first place or tied for first place every week this season, is slowly losing ground as Charlot Denmon and Ed Campbell creep up on the anonymous prognosticator. All three now sport identical 27-12 records as Campbell and Denmon each lost only two games this past week. Both were skunked on the Wyoming Valley West-Hazleton game which saw the Spartans drop a 3-0 decision and on the Notre Dame-Air Force game which was won by Air Force in a 21-15 deci- sion. Kilduff, a former employee of a New Jersey Air Force base, remained true blue to the United States service organization and was the only prognosticator to record a victory in that contest. Kilduff, who holds up the bottom of the prognos- ticators’ ladder with a 14-25 slate, picked up just one more victory in the Dallas-Tech game which the Mountaineers won, 31-0. . Petie had one of his worst weeks yet, dropping three of the seven contests. He was wrong on the Valley West game, the Notre Dame game and the Bishop O’Reilly/ Northwest game where Petie gave the Rangers an edge only to see them lost an 8-7 decision to the Queensmen. are Dotty Martin, who came in at 4- 3 this week, and Joe Gula, who picked five of seven games cor- rectly, as they sport identical 25-14 slates. This week, the odds are with Wyoming Area as everyone but Kilduff picks the Warriors to defeat Dallas. Martin and Gula are the only prognosticators to give the Trojans of Nanticoke Area an edge over Lake-Lehman while Kilduff is the only one to side with Blair over Wyoming Seminary. Crestwood gets a hands-down vote to defeat West Side Tech as do the Spartans of Wyoming Valley West to defeat Hanover. In the college ranks, Kilduff is alone in favoring Alabama to defeat the Nittany Lions of Penn State and also stands by himself in picking North Carolina State to defeat the University of Pittsburgh.
