Would you be surprised to learn School Board President Joseph Jones In it, Snyder announced that Dr. Molski cited Madeline Robert Kunkle, principal in the into the schools Dallas Post/Ed Campbell ‘ president of the nutrition, reading readiness, orien- tation to the full-time kindergarten program, and parent effectiveness. While the parents attend workshops, the pre-schoolers visit actual Kin- dergarten classrooms for a story hour. Kunkle explaiend how the program works and how it has been instrumental in the success of Lake- Lehman’s full day kindergarten pro- gram. Kathryn Gregory, whose ‘‘Accel- erated Earth and Space Science Program” was chosen in 1984 as a National Exemplar by the National Science Teachers’ Association, appeared at the conference to out- line the objectives and explainnthe program’s content. The course is unique because it concentrates on the local environment with little attention being paid to other sec- tions of the country. The theory behind this approach is that the skills learned from investigating local environment first-hand would be applicable to any region regard- less of geologic differences. Ms. Gregory teaches this course to eighth graders at the Lake-Lehman Junior High School. Kunkle, Ms. Gregory, and Dr. Preston were chosen as presentors ‘““...because of the quality of their programs and the timeliness of their topics.” Snyder commended the Lake-Lehman School District for their willingness to share these innovative programs with other schools across the state. Project approved U.S. Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski, (D- PA) recently announced the Veter- construction project for the VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. Nearly $2 million will serve to renovate the 10th floor of the facility for use as an alcohol treatment nursing unit. “This renovation will greatly improve the quality of treatment for patients while providing for proper maintenance of building operations as well “Kanjorski noted. Renova- tions: plans include upgrading mechanical, electrical and fire safety systems. According to a tentative construc- tion schedule issued by the Adminis- trator of Veterans Affairs, an archi- tectural contract will be announced this November, followed by a con- struction contract award in Febru- ary. The newly funded project is expected to take three years to complete.
