Coach Jim McCafferty’s team defeated Crestwood 3- 0 in the opening day league match and on Thursday, they blanked Bishop Hafey 7-0, with both games played at the Mountaineers field. In the game with Crestwood on Tuesday, Jimmy Lister scored two of the goals and John Tinner scored the third. The Mountaineers had 36 shots on goal, but socred only three times for a poor percentage. By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Correspondent Lady Knight field hockey girls have served notice they intend to follow in the footsteps of their former teammates, who graduated in June. They proved they meant it by taking their first two league games last week. Coach Jean Lipski’s girls blanked Tunkhannock 2-0, Wednesday, on their home field and earlier, on Monday afternoon the Lady Knights rolled over GAR 7-0, in their opening game of the season. Deanna Knorr opened the game for the Knights against Tunkhannock by scoring a goal 11:30 into the half on an assist by Sue DeGennarro. Morris was an outstanding forward: player. The Strikers used persistent offense and a smothering defense to beat the Roughnecks 4-0. Stuart Grahm, Michael Vozniak, Kenny Chapple and Eric Dieffenbacher each scored for the Strikers. Ryan Finn and Stuart Graham shared duty in the goal and shut out the Roughnecks. Colby and Gurtney Gauntlett played terrific defense in keeping the Roughnecks from putting much pressure on their goal. The Gauntletts have been consistent on offense and defense of the team all year. The Cosmos beat the Soccers 3-2 with goals scored by Danny Moses and Sean Callahan (2) for the Cosmos, and Randdy Slaff and Corey Cherup for the Soccers. SCORES: Aztecs 3, Comets 1; Stallions 5, Wings 0; Express 4, Arrows 2; Chargers 1, Lancers 0; U-12 action the Chargers, Stallions, and Kicks remained undefeated. The Stallions posted their victory over the Wings. The Wings’ Eric Stogoski tallied their only goal in the first guarter. In the last three quarters the Stallions were in charge with Todd Paczewski scor- ing three goals and David Fosko adding two to finish out the scoring at 5-1. The goalie, Scott Cox and defensive player, Matt Samuel were outstanding for the Stallions. Jason Mattey led the Kicks passt the Fury. In that game John Morris scored one and Mattey scored two to make it 3-0 at the half. The Fury retaliated in the second half with two quick goals by Billy Richardson and Steven rosenthal. Jim Reynold scored off a pass from Durelle Scott to finish the Charger’s scoring. Shawn Phillips and Dan Perato posted one a piece for the Lancers. Excelling on Charger’s defense for the day were Chris Boraski, Jeremy Williams and Leann Simon.
