By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Correspondent The course at Lehman Golf Club was a beautiful sight on Sunday with the velvet, green grass gleam- ing like a large emerald under the bright blue skies. Most colorful, however, were the bright reds, blues, greens, yellows and oranges combined with black or whites as dozens of lady golfers took to the course in the 2-Man Scramble Tour- nament which opened early in the morning. The ladies played in their own division while the men (many hus- bands of the lady competitors) teed off in their division. Many of the spectators on hand were interested in the women, probably more so than in past years and because of the increased number of lady golf- ers now entering the many tourna- ments at the various area courses and the fine scoresmore and more are turning in. Winners of the championship flight at the Lehman club last Sunday were Sandra Sharok and Catherine McMahon, two women many predicted would win; two women listed by John Spencer, manager and pro at the club as among the top golfers who play there. Sharok and McMahon turned in a 68, even score for the nine hole par 68 course. McMahon, who has been playing for about 13 years, started at Orange golf course (now Twin Oaks) and is self-taught, having never taken lessons. Two years ago, she joined the Lehman Golf Club and, in 1984, she won the Ladies Club Championship. Catherine has had two holes-in-one, one at Orange and one at Leliman. Sharok has been playing for about 20 years. She first started at Hollen- back course just to play and her father taught her. When she joind the Lehman Golf Club, she started to play in tournaments and, for the past two years, has started playing on other courses. Last year, she and Catherine McMahon won at Shadow- brook and the year before the two of them won at Sugarloaf. Sandra has two holes-in-one to' her credit, both of them at Lehman. In 1978 and 1980, she won the Ladies Club Championship at Lehman. An employee at Bell Telephone Co., Sandra also bowls in the Charles Hurst League at Stanton Lanes. Coming in second in the champi- onship flight were the Blackman sisters, Betsy and Brucille Black- man with a 71, three over the par 68 for the nine hole course. Betsy and Brucille took lessons at the CYC and have been members at Lehman for the past 23 years. They are among the top-rated golfers in the area. Betsy, in public relations at Native Textiles, Dallas, won the Ladies Club Championship at Lehman in 1977, 1981, 1982 and 1983. Brucille is secretary to the Board and to the superintendent at Wyo- ming Vallley West School District. Both sisters took only a basic course in golf at the CYC and since that time have learned through playing. Rose Radzinski and her partner, Paulette Poremba, tied for third with a 72, four over the 68 par course, with Linda Montville and Kay Stenick. These four are rela- tively new members at Lehman and considered by Spencer to have the potential to be exceptionally good golfers. Winners in the first flight were Ann Yudiski and Sandy Trocki with a 76, both women excellent golfers and not up to par Sunday. Ann, an antique dealer, has had some excel- lent scores in many past tourna- ments while Sandy Trocki, who has been playing for about 13 years, has won numerous tournaments among them Better Ball, Partners and last year came in fourth in the club championship. This year she will compete in the club championship tournament with her goal to win. Sandy took lessons from Sam Spen- cer, John’s father who purchased the site and built the Lehman Course. She works as title clerk in her husband’s business, Len’s Auto Sales. Millicent Kocher and Teresa Kempinski came in second in the first flight with an 81 and Imelda Kopstys and Bernice Lindquist placed third with 83. Annette Rus- sett and Luci Henry came in fourth One of the top-rated lady golfers at Lehman, according to John Spen- cer, is Katherine Penxa, who has been a member of the Lehman Club for 32 years. She joined the year Sam Spencer opened the course, 1953, when only four holes were completed. She took lessons from Sam and for the first 10 years competed with the male golfers and kept up to them. At that time there were no women members nor tour- naments. Since then she has won several tournaments. She and her partner won the first flight in a first flight in one at Shadowbrook. Kathryn has had a hole-in-one and two Eagles at Lehman and last week at Lehman she had four bir- dies. Kathryn is an amazing player since she is now 70-plus years young and still keeps up with the other top golfers. A young lady golfer at Lehman (21) not mentioned by John Spencer captured the Ladies Club Champion- ship in 1979. Perhaps he is too modest to mention her since the golfer is his daughter, Beth. Research, however, reveals that Beth is probably one of the best young golfers in this area. Proof of this could well come this month when Beth enters the Luzerne County Open at Wilkes-Barre Municipal Club. While attending Bishop O’Reilly High School, Beth played on the boys’ golf team and is the only girl to make the All Scholastic Golf Team in her senior year.
