DENMON Charlotte Slocum’s Back Moun- tain National Senior Girls All Stars defeated the American Girls All Stars, 7-2, Saturday to take the District 16 title and advance to Tuesday’s game with District 15's Roosevelt Trail. Pitcher Lori Cannon hurled a one- hitter for the nationals, struck out three and walked nine. The Ameri- cans Tracy Cave hit a single in the sixth inning for the only hit off Cannon. Cave, the losing pitcher, had a no strikeout, three walk game in taking the loss. Pam Coolbaugh led the Nationals at the plate with a triple, single and chalked up an RBI. Susie Slocum drove out a triple, tapped out a single and Noel Kusnicki accounted for two singles and knocked in two RBIs. The Nationals, District 16 champs for the third straight year advanced to Saturday’s game by defeating Mountaintop, 10-2, Thursday night in the district semi-final. Pam Coolbaugh did the pitching, giving up only two hits and Kuznicki combined in the win by hitting a two-run double and a three-run triple to account for five of her six RBI’s in the game. Mountaintop took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning but Nationals tied the score when Paula Switzer sent Susie Slocum home with a single. Kuznicki gave the Nationals a 2-1 lead in the fourth when she sent home Sue Slocum with a single but Mountaintop tied it up at 2-2 when Jen Klucar stole home. In the sixth inning, the Nationals and stayed in front the rest of the game. Kuznicki hit her two-run Safe at second double, Tracy Hunter hit an RBI sacrifice fly to the outfield and Holly Bachman scored on a bases loaded walk. : In the seventh Kuznicki’s triple scored three runs, then she scored on her hit when the ball was mis- played in the outfield. Sue Slocum, Laura Paynton, Pam Coolbaugh, Paula Sweitzer and Tracy Hunter hit singles in the game. The loss to the Nationals by the American All-Stars eliminates the team from further play. |: The American All Stars advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Avoca, 26-1, in a game which started July 12 but after an inning and half was postponed due to rain till July 14, when the game was resumed. The Back Mountain Amer- icans had 18 hits and numerous stolen bases. They defeated Wyoming-West Wyoming, 11-2, July 17, behind a one-hit game pitched by Lori Cave. Tracy Cave pitched a two-hitter against Avoca. “We counted on using our speed on the bases to win against the Nationals,” said Coach Mary Meighan. “We didn’t hit so we didn’t get on. I believe the pressure got to our girls and they made too many errors.” In Division 1, both the American and the National All star teams lost in the opening rounds. The Nation- als lost to 3-2 to Northwest and the Americans lost 23-8 to Mountaintop. The Americans three pitchers issued a total of 17 walks which gave Mountaintop the advantage. They scored four runs on walks in the first inning, as well as a two-run single and two errors. The 29th annual John Resse’s Summer Wrestling Clinic will be held Aug. 5-9 at the Wilkes Colleg Gymnasium. Two sessins will be held each day between the hours of 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The clinic, the oldest in Wyoming Valley, is under the direction of Wilkes College Head Wrestling Coach John Reese. Other clinicians scheduled to appear are Brooke Yeager, and Wilkes Assistant Coaches Gary Seigel and Tim McGinely. DENMON Staff Correspondent This season’s Back Mountain Boys All Stars teams were eliminated from District and Regional competi- tion early this. year when the American All Stars edged the Heights All Stars 2-1, in their opening round but lost, 3-2, to the Nanticoke All Stars on July 12 to put them out of the running. The National All Stars, last season’s champions, lost their opening game, 2-1, to St. Therese’s dropping them to the B. Division where they defeated Mountain- top, 7-1, then took Harveys Lake All Stars, 5-1, to advance to Monday’s game against Swoyersville for the District 16 B Division Little League championship. SWOYERSVILLE WINS In a closley contested game, Swoyersville took the title by downing the Back Mountain boys, 3-2. Gary Miller and Charles Rutt each drove in a run in the fourth inning to give Swoyersville the winning runs of the game. Miller hit a double to score pitcher Eric Pollick and Rutt grounded out, which scored Lou Marcin. Dave Ash scored the first run for Swoyersville when he came home on a wild pitch. The winning team’s hurler Pollick gave up only three hits in the game, fanned six and drove out two hits to aid in winning his own game. ; The Back Mountain team made a strong comeback in their top half of the sixth, scoring two runs with two men out but Pollick got the third man out on a pop-up fly. y LOSE TO ST. THERESE’S After losing to St. Therese’s in the opening game of the district play-offs, the Nationals won in five innings against Mountaintop. Heavy rain caused the short inning game. In picking up the win, Pitcher Brett Gauntlett gave up only three hits, fanning 10 and walking only six 1 P Shavertown while his teammates took advantage of six bases- loaded walks, three in the first inning and three in the : third, to score three runs in each of those two innings. 5 Back Mountain iced the win when Len Kelley hit a : double in the fourth inning to send home a run. Gauntlett, Eric Paczewski and N. Kaiser forced home the runs in the first inning and Gauntlett, Jim Cole and Randy Parry sent home the three runs in the third. Ha Mountaintop scored its single run in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Mike Chesna. DEFEAT MOUNTAINTOP The win over Mountaintop advanced the nationals to a July 17 game with Harveys Lake All Stars at Harveys Lake. The Nationals defeated the Lakers, 5-1, behind hurler Eric Paczewski, who gave up only five hits and aided in his team’s win by driving out a two- run homer. He also struck out nine at the plate and walked only four. Paczewski gave the Nationals an early 2-0 lead by driving out his homer in the first inning, scoring Mark Stallard ahead of him: i Harveys Lake scored its only run in the fifth inning when T. Martin and B. Haughney got on base ¥ singles and pitcher D. Bowman sent in the run fielder’s choice. The Lake nine rallied in the s geting two men on with one out but the Nationals ended the threat with a double play. The win sent the Nationals to the semi-final game, against Swoyersville on Monday to determine the B Division championship, which is as far as the B Division advances. Harveys Lake advanced to the game with the Nationals when they defeated the Mayflower All Stars, 3-0, on July 15, behind the two hit pitching of B. Haughney. Haughney fanned seven and walked only two while chalking up the shutout. Martin drove out a long triple, C. Bowman had three singles and J.
