Special to The Post
Bob Bleiberg,
editor and publisher
of Barron’s financial
weeky, is bullish on
America.
And though not
everyone stops to
listen when he speaks
- as they allegedly do
‘when E.F. Hutton
speaks’ - the smart
money in town should
be on Bleiberg.
What has Bleiberg
been telling his
quarter-millin sub-
scribers?
In the spring of
1982, when most econ-
omists agreed that
the recession was
coming to an end
(Business Week, for
example, headlined
its May 10, 1982 cover
story, » “Here Comes
the Recovery’’),
which is what it did,
right through the end
of November 1982.
On. November 22,
Bleiberg again went
against convention
and in a front-page
editorial said the
economy was headed
‘‘onward and
upward.” Six months
later, on June 27,
1983, when many
observers were still
voicing doubts about
the durability and
strength of the recov-
ery, Bleiberg again
climbed out on a limb
with a follow-up com-
mentary headlined
“Let the Good Times
Roll - Business
Recovery Promises to
Better Most of the
Forecasts.” And
again he called it

right.
I bring up these
brief slices of history
not just because Blei-
berg has a remarka-
ble track record span-
ning several decades,
but because he is out
on a limb again, pre-
dicting that every-
thing is in place for a
period of sustained
economic growth that
will likely cause eco-
nomic historians to
someday refer to our
times as the ‘“Amaz-
ing Eighties.”
Speaking recently
at a national leader-
ship conference spon-
sored by the presti-
gious Shavano
Institute, Bleiberg
offered a number of
reasons for his opti-
mism.
1) Contrary to pop-
ular opinion, the eco-
nomic recovery has
not been limited to
the United States, but
has been worldwide.
‘Indeed, since Janu-
ary 1, a dozen major
stock markets -
including Amster-
dam, Copenhagen,
Frankfurt, London,
Oslo, Paris, Singa-
pore, Stockholm,
Sydney, Taipei,
Tokyo, and Zurich -
have hit all-time
highs,’ he noted.
2) Despite: ‘‘the
grim predictions of
Henry Kaufman’ and
other doomsayers,
interest rates are
heading downward.
3) From the stand-
point of population
trends; the ’80s
‘shape up as poten-
tially one of the
greatest decades
since the Baby Boom
peaked in the late
’50s,’’ he said. In 1982,
for example, 2.5-mil-
lion Americans got
number of marriages
in U.S. history. On
the other side of the
coin, the number of
divorces dropped
three percent in 1982,
to roughly 1.2 million
- the first decline in
twenty years. Natu-
rally enough, he
noted, ‘‘something
resembling a modest
baby boom is under
way.”” And
affluent society,
‘‘there’s no more
powerful an economic
and social force than
family formation and
population growth.”
4) Despite all the
scare talk, Americans
are growing healthier
and living longer.
