INFORMATION
Lehman
adopts
policy
The following policy on admission
of beginners has been adopted by
the Lake-Lehman School Board.
- KINDERGARTEN - Children who
have reached the age of 5 years by
September 30, 1985, will be admitted
to the kindergarten program.
FIRST GRADE - Children who
have reached the age of 6 years by
September 30, 1985, will be admitted
to first grade.
ALL-DAY KINDERGARTEN -
Kindergarten in the Lake-Lehman
School District is an all-day pro-
gram.
Parents who were unable to regis-
ter their children during the April
registration days should register in
the Elementary Office located in the
Lehman-Jackson Elementary Build-
ing, Lehman or the Lake-Noxen
Elementary Building, Harveys
Lake.
Please remember this is one
school district and the Administra-
tion and Board of Directors reserve
the right to assign children to differ-
ent buildings. In order to maintain
reasonable sized classrooms, it may
be necessary to transfer children to
another building within the district.
Transportation would be furnished.
This year, a Pre-Kindergarten
Survey Clinic was conducted at the
same time as registration. The eval-
uation consisted of the following
screening areas: 1. Hearing; 2.
Speech; 3. Vision; 4. Motor Percep-
tion and Coordination; 5. Kindergar-
ten Readiness Assessment.
School officials must review a
child’s immunization record. Par-
ents are asked to bring all neces-
sary immunization records to school
at the time of registration. No child
will be admitted in the Lake-
Lehman School District until proof
of immunization is presented to the
school nurses.
Before entering school, State Law
requires the following immuniza-
tions:
3 Diptheria, 3 Tetanus, 3 Trivalent
Oral Polio Vaccine, 1 Measles, 1
Rubella, and 1 Mumps.
Vaccination for small pox is no
longer required for admission to
school. However, the Department of
Health has asked that an accurate
record be kept of all vaccinations. If
your child has been vaccinated,
‘please present the vaccination cer-
tificate at the time of registration.
It should also be remebered that
once a child is enrolled in the public
school, he then falls within the
provisions of the Compulsory
Attendance Law.
Committee
stuaying
curriculum
The Luzerne County Community
College’s Committee on Academic
Excellence, comprised of faculty
and administrators dedicated to
promoting quality education to all
students, is presently examining the
undergraduate curriculum at the
institution.
Study groups have been formu-
lated to address such areas as the
diversity of the student body, since
only two in three freshman now
enter college immediately . after
high school. Other topics being
examined deal with problems asso-
ciated with commuting students,
expanding campus enrollments, and
areas that effect the student learn-
ing experience.
The major emphasis of the com-
mittee, however, is to provide cur-
ricular coherence, intellectural
rigor, and humanistic strength. In a
society that has changing needs and
expectations, it is imperative that
all graduates have a firm founda-
tion in writing, reading, speaking,
listening, logical thinking, historical
consciousness, and computer liter-
acy.
Weis continues
search for kids
Sigfried Weis, President of Weis
Markets, Inc. today announced that
Weis Markets through the use of the
“Good Neighbor Message Centers’
in its supermarkets, will continue
their effort in the search for missing
children.
- In the beginning of this year, Weis
Markets introduced the missing
children program in its marketing
area through the use of pictures of
these children on its milk cartons.
This second phase will be
launched in cooperation with Super-
market Communication Systems
which has been working to develop
this program nationwide. It is hoped
that by the time that this program
will be in force, that over 5,000
supermarkets will be participating
and that these missing children
displays will then reach over 70
million shoppers weekly.
Installation of the displays has
been started throughout the Weis
Market chain and should be com-
pleted within the next two weeks.
Personnel who service the “Good
Neighbor” displays will be replac-
ing eight missing children pictures
monthly.
