By JUDIE MATHERS Staff Writer ~ According to Dallas Borough Mayor Paul Labar, a traffic light is going to be installed at the intersec- tion of Routes 415 and 309 on the Memorial Highway by Franklin's Restaurant in Dallas. The light is part of a large rehabilitation project PennDOT has undertaken to upgrade the roadways and alleviate problems in that area. “Included in that same project,” explained Labar, ‘‘are changes for the lights ‘in Dallas center. The existing traffic lights will be replaced by lights that work on a treadle system. They will allow time for a minimum of three cars and a maximum of 10 to enter the highway from Lake Street, Church Street, and Main Street. That should control the traffic flow much more efficiently than the lights do now and solve the tie-ups that often The overall project is a result of a survey conducted at the end of last summer by PennDOT. Labar stated that PennDOT officials submitted proposals based on their findings to the Borough for approval last Fall. PennDOT will bear the initial cost of the improvements, then it will be up to the Borough for maintenance and repair. By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Correspondent One hundred thirty large American Flags lined the Avenue of Flags in the Military Garden of Honor section of Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Memorial Highway, Dallas, over the Memorial Day weekend. The flags that fly in the breeze along the Avenue of Flags each Memorial Day are those which were formerly draped over the caskets of veterans interred in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Park and donated to the park by the veterans families. At the base of each flag is a sign engraved with the name and rank of the deceased veteran and the branch of the service in which he served. A large gold-covered cement: stone in. the center of the Garden of Honor holds a large American flag encircled by five flags, represent- ing the five major branches of the military — the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard. The center flag is in honor of the Gold Star Mothers. In addition, a small American flag donated by Luzerne County officials is placed on the grave of each veteran in the Park. The Avenue of Flags, introduced by the Cemetery Management Service East (CMSE), is an annual custom honoring the veterans who gave their lives for their country. There is such a display in each of the 25 Memorial Parks owned by CMSE, whose home office is in Glenshaw, a suburb of Pittsburgh. In addition to Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, there are two other CMSE Memorial Parks, Elan Memorial in Bloomsburg, and Fairview Memorial in Elmhurst. The memorial parks are public burial parks with a private section for the interment of veterans and their wives or families. Free burial service is offered to those veterans who are honorably discharged, but there is a fee for burial of other members of the veterans family. Each year a Memorial Day Service is held at Chapel Lawn and a large wreath placed at the base of the center flag. This year, Mrs. Matilda Shonk and Mrs. Doris Ruger, widows of veter- ans, placed the wreath at the base of the Gold Star flag. Chapel Lawn is divided into several Gardens other than the Garden of Honor. There is a | Garden of Devotion highlighted by a large open Bible engraved with the 23rd Psalm. Stoecklein as president and several of his sons and grandsons, vice presidents and directors in the operation.
