DENMON Staff Correspondent The Dallas High School girls’ soft- ball team clinched a playoff spot in Division AAA of the Wyoming Valley Conference last Monday when they rolled over Wyoming Area 10-1. Coach Jay Pope’s Lady Mounts then went on to defeat the Valley West Spartans, 5-2, and Wyo- ming Seminary, 6-4. The three wins guaranteed the team second spot in the league playoffs with a game against Nanticoke scheduled for May 20. In Saturday’s contest with Wyo- ming Seminary, Lisa Sharkness hurled the first five innings, but was relieved by pitcher Tracey Cave for the final two innings. Cave was credited with the win for the Moun- taineers. Joyce Tinner drove out the only two extra base hits for Dallas, a double and a triple. The freshman drove out the triple in the seventh inning, driving in two runs that clinched the win for the Mountai- neers, who finished second in league play with a 15-3 record. Senior Jill Radzinski had the lone hit for the Mountaineers in Wednes- day’s game with Wyoming Valley West, but it was enough for the Dallas girls win over the Spartan. Radzinski’s double combined with 11 walks and four Spartan errors were enough for the Lady Mounts to score one run in the first, second and sixth innings and two in the fourth. ; Tracey Cave picked up the win for the Mounts, giving up only three hits and striking out three. She had game with no walks. Cooper, losing pitcher for the Spartans, fanned three but walked eight. The relief hurler, Allen, fanned two and walked three. The win was Cave’s 11th of the league season. ROMP OVER WA The Lady Mounts rebounded from their loss to Crestwood and on Monday, May 13, traveled to Wyo- ming Area where they romped over the Warriors 10-1. Behind good pitching by Lisa Sharkness and Tammy Daveski’s hitting, the Lady Mounts combined a total of seven hits with 11 walks and several Warrior errors to pile up 10 runs, five of them crossing the plate in the fifth inning. Daveski hit a single and a double BAEK MOUNTAIN while Sharkness gave up five hits and walked only five. Missy Ripa went two-for-four at the plate for the Warriors and Cathy Grindall drove out a double. Simba Harris was credited with the loss, giving up five walks. Relief hurler Aire issued six walks before the Dallas girls cooled off by the War- riors. LEHMAN TIED Lake-Lehman girls are tied with Wyoming Seminary for top place in Division AA by virtue of the Blue Knights’ loss to Dallas on Saturday afternoon. They will meet in a playoff for the league title before going into the playoffs. In a game marked by seven homeruns, Hazleton outdid the Lady Knights at the plate in a slugging contest to win, 16-13. Hazleton jumped out to a three- run lead in the first inning and four more in the second to go in front 7-0. C. McGarry’s three-run homer and S. Polinsky’s three-run triple accounted for the big lead. The Knights came back in the third and fourth to cut the lead to 7- 4 when Sandy Dicton drove out a two-run homer and Lori Pantle hit an RBI single combined with Chris Wasculis’ sacrifice fly to the out- field. In the bottom of the fourth, Hazle- ton went in front 11-4 as they scored four runs, one of them on A. DeLuca’s homerun. The Knights drew closer in the fifth on an RBI double by Cindy Slocum and a three-run homer belted out by Beth Finn, to put the score at 11-8. The Mountaineers were not to be outdone and in their half of the fifth took a 14-8 lead on'an RBI single by C. Walton, a fielder’s choice and an error. They extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth on a triple by J. Hydo and a double by D. Ratchko. In the top of the sixth, Kelly Wandel cut the Mountaineers lead and in the top of the seventh with one out, Wascalus knocked out a grand slam to make the score 16-13. Hazleton Coach N. Campagna pulled his pitcher Lisa Imbriaco for Tracey Walton, who retired the next two Knights in order. FINN IN CONTROL In the game with GAR, Lake- Lehman girls moved into first place in the division playoffs by shutting out the Grenadiers 10-0 in five innings. Hurler Beth Finn was in complete control as she fanned eight, walked only two and gave up only two hits in gaining the win. The Knights took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on three errors by the Grenadiers, then scored a fourth run in the second inning on singles by Sandy Dicton, Sue Slocum, Kelly Wandel and Cindy Slocum. They scored five more in the fourth inning on three errors by the Grena- diers, Cindy Slocum’s two-run single and a sacrifice fly by Chris Wascu- lus. the plate and scored three runs, started the fifth inning with a single. She went to third on an error and scored the 10th and final run of the game when Sue Slocum drove out a sacrifice fly. Wandel and C. Slocum were two- for-three at the plate. In taking the win, Finn gave up one hit, a short single by Grenadier Lee Cordisco in the fifth inning. Kim Skrepenak was the losing hurler for GAR allowing seven hits, fanning one and walking two. It was errors that hurt the Grenadiers throughout the game. There is a strong possibility the teams may meet in the playoffs.
