The’ Dallas Post marked another successful step on
its path to continued growth in the Back Mountain last
Thursday evening when it sponsored its first Apprecia-
tion Banquet at the Jonathan R. Davis Fire Hall in
Idetown, with Marge Garinger as guest speaker.
Four seniors, Amy Aston and Matt Medura of Dallas
High School and Sandy Dicton and Dave Janiczek of
Lake-Lehman High, were honored as the newspaper’s
first Student/Athletes. All four, along with their
parents, attended the dinner.
Eleven newspaper carriers, the largest number of
carriers to hold paper routes at one time for The
Dallas Post, and seven Back Mountain school corre-
spondents were also guests of honor. All were accom-
panied by their parents and other members of their
families.
The route carriers’ program was initiated by Jean
Brutko, circulation manager, and the school corres-
pondens program, including Gate of Heaven, Lake-
Lehman and Dallas High Schools, was reinatated as a
feature of The Dallas Post after being dropped many
years ago.
The dinner received a favorable reaction from the
students and their families as well as from members
of the newspaper staff and their guests.
‘A delightful evening,” said several of the parents.
“It was really great and a pleasant surprise to us,”
remarked the student/athletes following the program.
“We thoroughly enjoyed Ms. (Dotty) Martin as
mistress of ceremonies, and Marge Garinger’s talk
about her experience as manager of the United States
Women’s Field Hockey team was excellent.”
Plaques and Dallas Post jackets were presented by
Dotty Martin, editor of The Dallas Post, to the
student/athletes, school correspondents and carriers.
The event was the first of its kind to be sponsored by
The Dallas Post and is expected to become an annual
affair. Ms. Martin introduced all staff members of The
Post in attendance.
“Amidst the confusion of moving this week to our
new location in the Route 309-415 Plaza along the
Dallas Highway, and meeting the deadlines for this
week’s issue of The Dallas Post, I didn’t believe we
would ever make it tonight,” she said. “But here we
are and I am delighted to see that you all were able to
be with us. I hope this will be the first of many such
events to follow in the years ahead.”
Production manager Sandra Sheehan presented Ms.
Martin with a gift from The Dallas Post staff in
appreciation for the work the editor did in coordinat-
ing the banquet.

Sandy Dicton, Lake-Lehman High
School senior, has accepted a grant
to Ursinus College, Division I school
in the Philadelphia area, it was
announced by High School Guidance
Counselor Florence Finn.
Ms. Dicton was honored by The
Dallas Post Thursday evening at its
first-ever Appreciation Banquet as
the 1984-85 Female Student/Athlete
from Lake-Lehman High School.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
James Dicton, RD, Fieldcrest,
Shavertown, Sandy has an aca-
demic average of 4.1 and is also an
outstanding athlete having partici-
pated in hockey, basketball and
softball during her high school
career. During her junior year, she
was named All Scholastic to the
second teasm in all three sports.
This year, Sandy was named MVP
in ‘hockey and All Scholastic in
basketball.
Sandy said she had been con-
tacted by various schools, but had
narrowed them down to University
of Rhode Island, Wilkes, Villanova,
Kent State and Ursinus.
“I finally decided on Ursinus
because they place emphasis on
field hockey which is my favorite
sport and because they play in
Division I. It is a small campus and
is in the country which I believe I
will like,” said Sandy.
In announcing Sandy’s choice,
Mrs. Finn said she was very happy
that the senior had been accepted at
wv
demic status and its field hockey
program.
“I believe Sandy will fit in well,
coming from Lake-Lehman which is
a small school, because Ursinus is
small with about 1500 students. I
went down to visit the campus with
Sandy. She liked the school and was
very happy with Adele Boyd, the
hockey coach,” said Mrs. Finn. “I
had hoped Sandy could attend a
college worthy of her academic and
hockey ability. I believe she will be
the first Lake-Lehman student to
play Division I hockey. It’s also
interesting that Marge Garinger (a
Harveys Lake resident who served
as manager of the United States
Women’s Olympic Field Hockey
team at the Los Angeles Olympics
in 1984) also attended Ursinus. I
hope that’s an inspiration for
Sandy.”
Sandy will leave for Ursinus in
August, in time for hockey practice.
