Work begins

Ciean up along Toby Creek got underway last week
through funding received by Kingston Township from
the Department of Environmental Resources.
The firm of Freeman, Robbins Jr. and Son of
Unityville, who were awarded the $20,189.00 contract
by the township, began work near the Franklin St.
Bridge.
According to Mark Kunkle, Kingston Township
administrator, gabion walls will be installed along the
side of the creek where there are residences.
“These are retaining walls made of wire mesh cubes
filled with stones,” Kunkle explained. ‘They are
constructed on the order of a brick wall. They will

prevent any erosion of the residents’ properties. The
other side of the creek is being widened and sloped, so
that the creek can accommodate large volumes of
water.”
The project, which is scheduled to be completed by
the end of May, will run from the Main Street Bridge
(just behind the Shavertown Volunteer Fire Company)
1000 feet north towards the Dallas Township line. Upon
completion, information on the project will be submit-
ted by the Township to the Federal Emergency
Management Association.
“Along with the previous replacement of the Main
Street Bridge, the work currently being done should
improve flood conditions by reducing the flood plain,”
Kunkle said. “We are hopeful that this may reduce
flood insurance for residents located along the creek.”
