Cars like people, are at their best when
the temperature is about 72 degrees. But,
this winter’s cold wave and last
summer’s heat waves have been tough on
man and machine.
By mid-August we may have set an all
time record for hot weather car trouble.
To help assure that your car is not one of
those stalled along the side of the road,
practice these suggestions offered by the
Car Care Council.
-Be sure your cooling system is in good
condition. You may have made it this far,
but the advent of more hot weather could
bring about the failure of a hose, belt or
other components. How long has it been
since you checked your anti-freeze-coo-
lant?
-How about the condition of your tires?
Heavy loads at high speed on hot sur-
faces is hard on tires. To avoid failure
make sure they have plenty of tread and
are properly inflated. Check them n the
morning, when they are cool.

Today’s automobiles operate more effi-
ciently and use less gas than those
produced just a few years go. But, we
shouldn’t forget that maintaining good
gas mileage is still dependent on overall
auto maintenance and your driving
habits.
Here are some maintenance and driv-
ing tips that will promote better gas
mileage in any car.
~— Keep the engine tuned. A poorly
percent of your gas.
— Have the carburetor idle adjustment
checked. Too rich a setting, a too-fast
idle or a setting that causes stalling,
wastes gas. Remember, a dirty carbu-
retor can cut three miles off your per
gallon average.
— Check the spark plugs. Dirty, worn
plugs can’t deliver the intense spark
needed to efficiently burn fuel. One bad
spark plug can reduce MPG by as much
as 12 percent while increasing hydro-
carbon emissions by as much as 300
percent.
— Check the battery frequently. Dirty
terminals reduce the effectiveness. As a
result, engine starting may be damaged.
— Replace dirty air filters; they can
cut your MPG by one mile. A clogged air
filter restricts air flow, and may result in
a too-rich air-fuel mixture.
— Keep tires properly inflated and
engine may burn more fuel by working
harder to overcome the increased fric-
tion. Under-inflated tires can wste as
much as one mile per gallon, while radial
tires can increase your gas mileage by as
much as five percent.
— Maintain the cooling system.
Engines are most fuel-efficient when the
PAGE FOUR
operating temperatures are kept within
specifications. Make sure the system
hoses and engine V-belts are in good
condition. If the car is four yers old, the
belts should be replaced.
— Make sure the ignition wiring is
clean and free of cracks or breaks.
Replace them if they are too oily or dirty.
to provide a hot spark for more fuel-
efficient combustion.
— Use only the proper grade and type
of gasoline specified in your car’s operat-
ing manual.
— Try some of the new ‘’slippery’’ oils;
they can increase your fuel economy by
reducing engine friction.
— Avoid prolonged idling. If you must
stop forr more than a few minutes, shut
the engine off. Restarting the engine uses
less gas than idling at a long stop.
— Drive smoothly. Avoid jackrabbit
starts and sudden stops. Rapid sporadic
acceleration accompanied by sudden
stops can waste up to seven percent of
your gas. Try to keep your speed as
constant as possible; variance reduces
fuel economy. A cruise control saves gas
on long drives.
— If your car has manual transmis-
sion, drive in high gear as often as
possible. Don’t use a lower gear for
slowing down, use the brakes.
— Don’t carry or store excess weight in
your car. Every additional 100 pounds
reduces your fuel economy by one per-
cent or more.
— Don’t use the brake pedal as a foot
rest. Riding the break causes the engine
to work harder and waste fuel.
These are just a few of the many ways
that you can save gas. Try them; you'll
probably be surprised at your savings.
