“AUNT
PA
DEAR AUNT PATTY:
I think your advice column is a
great idea. I have often felt like I
could use help from an outsider with
a particular problem, but didn’t
know where to turn. I know I could
have written to Dear Abby or Ann
Landers or someone like that, but I
really like the idea of a local
column. It feels more personal.
Would you please tell me a little
bit about yourself and your qualifi-
cations for being ‘‘Aunt Patty”?
I know I would feel more comfort-
able about writing to you about my
problems and I'm sure it would
make others feel better.
Thanks! :
WONDERING
DEAR WONDERING:
My qualifications include a col-
lege degree, writing and counseling
experience, and a teaching back-
ground. I also have experience as a
wife, mother, and working woman.
But, none of the above credentials
means anything when it comes to
giving advice if I didn’t have plain
common sense! I am not an author-
ity on any subject and I expect my
readers to correct my blunders and
give me advice when I need it. The
purpose of this column is the same
as the philosophy behind the column
Ann Landers writes - ‘to provide
correct information, separate fact
from fiction, give hope, understand-
ing, and encouragement to those
who need it”. All letters will be
treated confidentially and your
name will not be printed.
DEAR AUNT PATTY:
My daughter is allergic to choco-
late and I don’t like my other
children to have a lot of sweets
either. What do we tell the Easter
Bunny?
ANTI-CANDY
DEAR ANTI-CANDY:
Ask the Bunny for a basket filled
with dried fruit treats, plastic eggs
filled with raisins and fancy little
crackers. Also wild shoelaces, a
character toothbrush, an Easter
book, barrettes, new crayons, or
tickets to the upcoming circus. For
a teen it could include make-up,
cologne, a favorite magazine, and
fast-food or movie gift certificates.
DEAR AUNT PATTY:
I am a senior at Lake-Lehman
High School. My girlfriend is a
junior at Dallas. With prom time
coming up soon, we have a problem
and hope you might help.
Of course, being a senior and all,
I want to go to my prom at Lake-
Lehman. My girlfriend, understand-
ably so, wants to go to her prom at
Dallas. The problem is she refuses
to wear the same dress to both
proms and says she can’t afford to
buy a second dress.
I would buy her another dress if I
could, but I have to save my money
for college next year. My girlfriend
says 1 should make the choice as to
which prom we go to, but I don’t
want to hurt her feelings by choos-
ing to go to the Lake-Lehman prom.
We’ve decided to let you help,
Aunt Patty. Please give us an
answer that will be fair to both of
us.
PERPLEXED PROM-GOERS
DEAR PROM GOERS: j
Go to your prom this year and her
prom next year.
DEAR AUNT PATTY: :
My mother is a pain in the neck,
what it is, she finds fault with it. It
can be anything from child rearing
to baking a cake. I've tried ignoring
her remarks, arguing with her, and
showing her proof that I was right.
What do you suggest I do? Please
give me a helpful idea. Thanks.
DISTRAUGHT DAUGHTER
DEAR DISTRAUGHT DAUGH-
TER:
Sometimes even mothers need
some mothering. Try for at least
three weeks to avoid argument and
be agreeable. Give your mother
some unexpected compliments and
ask her for some advice. Thank her
for it and show her some apprecia-
tion and love. Treat her like you
would like to be treated and see if
your problems lessen. Let me know
what happens.
