Rep- resentatives Frank Coslett, George Hasay and Stanley Jarolin were in attendance. Supt. Joe Ryan reviewed the December attempted escape and explained the institution’s procedure for control of tools such as the saw blade used in that attempt. Supt. Ryan is proud of both their tool and key control system and noted it is a model program statewide. He indi- cated the security weak points iden- tified by the attempt have been corrected. The number of correction officers rose from 277 last October to 290 presently with approximately 30 more anticipated with the comple- tion of the new cell blocks. Inmate population rose from 1565 to 1629 - up 64 - at the same time. Some of this increase, is housed in the second modular unit installed late last year. Three separate projects are now underway at the facility. First, the construction of two new cell blocks which is 75 percent complete and two to three months ahead of sched- ule. The second project is construction of another tower which will greatly improve security at the main gate. The third project is of three parts: the second perimeter fence, improved lighting and the new siren. Specifications are being pre- pared for review by the institution staff and the State G.S.A. The com- mittee was surprised by the bid date of Feb. 14, 1986 for the fence, lighting and siren. Actual installa- tion would follow in later 1986 or 1987. The Legislators agreed with committee complaints on the slow schedule - especially on the siren. They agreed to as a group to contact G.S.A. to improve the siren installation date. Supt. Ryan said he would do everything he could to help this happen. It is noted that past Supt. Jeffees is presently serving as Commis- sioner and that the Bureau of Cor- rections has become the Dept. of Corrections. Supt. Ryan and the Legislators felt Mr. Jeffes presence at Harrisburg has been beneficial to S.C.I.D. The committee thanks Mr. Cos- lett, Mr. Hasay and Mr. Jarolin for their efforts and recognize the fine job Supt. Ryan and his staff did through 1984. Mr. Kuzminsky of Senator O’Connell’s office was missed at the meeting. He was not able to attend due to illness. The committee toured the new construc- tion following the meeting. Let “Aunt Patty" A
