Afterr defeating Honesdale, 59-49, in the opening round of District 2 AAA playoffs, Wednesday, Feb. 27, the Lady Mountaineers went down 54-48 to Scranton Prep, Friday, March 1, at Pittston Area High School. In the opener with Honesdale, the Dallas girls took an early first period 16-3 lead aided by turnovers created by Kim Rinehimer’s steals and a trap defense. Cheryl Gavigan, Kim Rollman and Karen Vloedman paced Dallas with a combined total of 42 points in the game. Gavigan led with 16 points, Vloedman followed with 14 and Rollman added 12. Honesdale’s three points in the first period were on hits from the foul line with Heidi Robbins making both ends of @ one-and-one and Mary Wilcox giving one. Both teams were cold in the second period, and the first half ended with Dallas leading 27-17. Honesdale, however, came within four points in the second period before Rollman hit two points with less than two minutes remaining. Gavigan made two from the free line and Rollman put two shots through the nets to end the half with 27-17. With 3:00 minutes remaining in the third period Gavigan went to the bench with a fourth personal foul. The Hornets used their opportunity to close the score to 38-35 and at the beginning of the final period came to within one point of Dallas before the Back Mountain girls settled down and went to work. Gavigan scored two fouls and a two point shot and Vleedman hit to give Dallas a seven point lead. In the final minutes they completed 13 of 22 tries to take the 59-49 win. LEHMAN ELIMINATED Lake-Lehman girls basketball team were eliminated from District 2 AA finals, Friday, March 1, when they went down 55-34 to Riverside. The teams played on even turns in the first half and the Lady Knights were down 22-21, only one point, going into the lockerroom. In the early minutes of the third period, Coach Joe Martini’s Knights led 24- 22 despite being much shorter than their opponents. Riverside has two six foot starters while the Knights tallest girl is 5 ft. 8 inch forward Lori Lopasky. The Vikings used a 2-3 zone in the first half but in the third period they chanbged to 1-3-1 zone and com- pletely dominated the Knights. The Vikings went on to outscore Lake- Lehman 14-7 and 19-6 in the third and fourth periods to win 55-34. The girls gave Martini everything he asked for, he said, but they were no match without an inside game. He said he was proud of the way the girls played in the situation they were in. Ladies finish fine season The Lady Highlanders of College Misericordia finished a fine season with a 13-6 record, finishing in the runner-up spot of the N.A.I.A. Dist. 19 Playoffs. In their initial playoff game the Highlanders, outdueled rival Beaver College ogf Willow Grove 77-59. Led by Liz Eife’s 12 first half points (10 of their first 14) Miseri jumped out to a 24-14 lead and were never really challenged afterwards. In all, the Miseri squad placed three girls in double figures, led by Sue Sharp’s 26, Liz Eife’s 19 and Kim Stetzar’s 16. Ozgo said his boys did not play as well as they should have but that he was proud of them. He said Farrell did a great job for Dallas and has been a pressure player all season. The Dallas coach also commended the entire team saying that they gave a great team effort with Darling and Wilson showing outstanding leadership. 8b Meyers wins Lehman misses out on District 2 team mat title By JOHN RODGERS Staff Correspondent Daryl Boich of Meyers, once again foiled Lake-Lehman’s chances for a team district title. In the Heavyweight class, Daryl led Meyers to a 155-144Y% victory with a 4-3 decision over Chris Van Gorder. In the meet, Jeff Austin got things rolling for Lehman, when at 98 1bs. he decisioned Bishop Hoban’s Dan Mimnaugh 4-0. At 105 1bs., Tim Casey of Meyers put Dave Guzenski of Lehman on his back for the first Meyers win in three, head to head matches in the finals. | Steve Tredinnick of Meyers then decisioned Duane Miller 9-6 at 112 Ibs. in a very good match. At 119 Ibs. Joe Smith of Lehman got the Knights back on track with an 11-3 decision over Tim Pane of Bishop O’Hara. Norm Clancy then pinned Mark Gillen of Bishop Hobvan in 5:31 at the 122 1b. class. In this match Daryl Boich of Meyers, (who received the Tracy Slocum award for outstanding wres- tler) redeemed an earlier season loss to Van Gorder, with a 4-3 decision in the match of the day. In all, Lehman will be sending six grapplers to regionals at Williams- port next Saturday. At regionals expect “Gold” from Jeff Austin and Norm Clancy while Ed Stratford and Chris Van Gorder may also have fine showings. The grapplers of Dallas were over experienced in A.A.A. meets. But the young Mountaineers gained cru- cial experience and a few showed respectability as well as promise for next year. In the consolation finals, Billy Mathers was pinned in the 105 pound class in 2:51 by Todd Jackson of Valley View. Smith defeated Dawe, 11-3, and captured a first place in the 119 pound weight class of the AA Division. | Locals dump Alvernia The men of College Misericordia ended their season on top of the hill as they dumped favored Alvernia College in the finals of the Keystone Athletic Conference 77-75. They gained the rights of playing the final game against Alvernia by defeating Penn State Capitol in another squeaker 81-80. The finals, which could remind you of a Gillette fantastic finish saw burly Dan Smith canned an outside jumpers with six seconds remaining. The key to Miseri’s success was patience, leading 22-20 Alvernia out- scored Miseri 13-4 to take a 35-24 lead. Tom Bossler who ended his career with a Berks collegiate record 2316 points canned nine of those points, and finished with a game high of 27 points. % Miseri however came right back with 10 straight points, highlighted by Monte Deyo’s half court shot off the glass to give the Blue and Gold a 42-41 halftime lead. Deyo finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes when an ankle injury forced him out of the game. Return- ing later but not nearly at 100 percent. > Senior Dan Smith however, saved his best for last. Finishing with 18 points crammed eight of those into the final five minutes including the game winner. We aren’t a terrifically talented team, we don’thave any height or experience, but we make up for it with guts, stated coach Clocker.
