Dallas School District Acting
Superintendent, Gerald Wycalis, has
indicated that 97 students in the

instruction as a result of the compe-

by: the district’s third, fifth, and
eighth graders, of these 97 students,
45 students will be participating in
both the Math and Reading Reme-
dial Programs. TELLS (Testing for

component of Govenor Dick Thorn-

Agenda for Excellence in Pennsyl-

announced last year. Statewide,

While all third, fifth and eighth
grade students in public schools
were required to take the tets,
participation by nonpublic schools
was voluntary.
The tests showed that among 152
third grade students who took the
reading tests, 82 percent exceeded
the cutoff score of 29 correct
answers out of 52 questions. For
third grade mathematics, 88 percent
exceeded the cutoff score of 39 out
of 63 questions.
Among 187 fifth grade students
taking the reading test, 92 percent
exceeded the cutoff score of 37 out
of 65 questions. For the fifth grade
mathematics test, 79 percent of the
fifth graders exceeded the cutoff
score of 40 correct answers out of 66
questions.
Among 263 eighth grade students
taking the reading test, 83 percent
exceeded the cutoff score of 46 out
of 76 questions. On the mathematics
test, 86 percent of the eighth grad-
ers exceeded the cutoff score of 40
correct answers out of 78 questions.
Wycallis stated that although stu-
dents enrolled in some specail edu-
cation classes took the tests, their
scores were not included in the
results he released. Those students,
he said, receive appropriate serv-
ices through their individual educa-
tion programs (IEP’s). TELLS test
data for exceptional students pro-
vide additional information for
developing IEP’s.
“The next step,” Wyecallis said,
“is to design remedial instruction
programs for the regular students
who were identified by the TELLS
tests.” He noted, however, in pass-
ing this year’s state budget, the
General Assembly appropriated
funds for remedial instruction fol-
lowing the TELLS tests. The legisla-
ture distributed $17 million of those
funds among the state’s 501 school
districts with the Dallas School Dis-
trict being alloted $15,871. Those
funds are designated for remedia-
tion related activities and other
efforts to improve instruction.
Another $7 million will be distrib-
uted on the basis of the test results.
The school district’s plan for
remedial instruction is being pre-
pared and remedial instruction is
scheduled to begin during the
second semester. Within the next
week, schools will send individual
student’s scores home with each
child. Parents should be watching
for reports and should contact the
principal of theri child’s school if
they have any questions about the
scores.
