“Pets quickly become members
of the family and can bring years of
happiness to households, as long as
they receive proper care. But there
is the possibility of some health
problems when bringing a pet into
the family,” Witte says.

in those who are sensitive. Allergic
reactions are often caused by tiny
flakes of skin shed by dogs and cats.
This skin, called dander, can cause
hives or asthma in humans. When
people complain of being allergic to
pet hair, it’s really not the hair, but
the dander that causes teary eyes
and sneezing.”
Witte says, fortunately serious
injuries from dog or cat bites don’t
occur often. “The major problem
from a bite is infection, which can
be eliminated or reduced quickly by
washing the wound thoroughly with
soap and water, applying an anti-
septic and leaving it exposed to the
air or covering with a light dress-
ing.”
Children may accidentally swal-
low soil or material contaminated
by dog or cat excrement, which can
cause subsequent health problems.
Young pets should be examined
frequently for worms and treated, if
necessary, to avoid the problem.
The old story of keeping pregnant
women and cats apart has its basis
in fact. Cat feces often carry an
organism that can cause blindness
or retardation in the human fetus.
For this reason, pregnant women
should be cautious in handling cats
and “should avoid handling. litter
boxes altogether. :
Probably the biggest health’ con-
cern for cat ‘and ‘dog! owners is
rabies. Owners who make sure their
pets have current rabies shots,
place a barrier between themselves
and the fatal disease. Witte says pet
immunizations are especially
important if the animal is kept
outside where it can come in con-
tact with wild animals, the carriers
in Pennsylvania’s current rabies
epidemic.
Among other health problems that
can be contracted from pets are
ringworm, bacterial infections, ticks
