A popular description of the Dallas Senior High
School football field this year has been a ‘dust bowl.”
No one appeared to know why the field was in the
condition it was in for the first month or two of school,
but rumor had it that weed killer mixed with lime had
killed not only the weeds, but the grass as well.
spent approximately $10,000 to sod the field and now
that money was wasted.
While there is a trace of truth in the rumor
circulating throughout the Back Mountain, it is not the
entire story.
In conversation with District Superintendent Gerald
Wyecalli and Maintenance Director Richard Morgan,
The Dallas Post has learned that until Nov. 15, the
Dallas District had only one groundskeeper. That man
was responsible for the upkeep of all of the grounds
within the district. Normally, it requires one day: of his
time at each field when they are in use. ;
To line the football field, it takes two men a full day
to do the work, so it was decided this year to mix
season, thus making it easier to stain and stripe the
line markings.
According to Morgan and Wyecallis, everything
would have been fine, except for a steady downpour of
rain immediately after the mixture had been applied.
The rain, which continued all afternoon one day and
the entire next day or two, caused the mixture to
spread. .
Other factors, such as use of the field by the mini-
football teams, high school bands and the physical
education classes, also had an effect on the field.
“For the first few games, the field was bad, but theZ”
we fertilized and seeded it and, for our last few home
games, the field was much better,” said Morgan.
School officials also explained that they had a
representative from the Pennsylvania Department of
Agriculture look at the field and he explained that the
type of grass was not conducive to the use of the field.
The groundskeeper from Irem Temple Country Club
also looked at the field as did a representative of Penn
State Seed Company. All three men were in agreement
that the wrong kind of grass was presently on the
field, that it had the wrong type of roots for a football
field. They recommended a different kind of seeding
for next season, one which the District plans to use.
The amount spent by the school district to sod the
field was in excess of $20,000, according to Wycallis,
who was with the district at the time the sodding was
done. The sodding was not in 1976 or 1977 by Dallas
Nursery and Landscaping. Former Dallas Coach Jack
Jones verified this date, stating that he was coaching
at the time the field was sodded.
“That field was in bad condition for a long time,”
said Jones. “It needs something done to put it in
proper shape.”
