The Dallas Mountaineers won
their first Wyoming Valley Confer-
ence football game Saturday after-
noon when they defeated the North-
west Rangers, 15-0, before a sparce
crowd at the Mountaineers’ sta-
dium.
The score does not give the true
picture of the game since Dallas
Coach Ron Rybak used the oppor-
tunity to play many of his younger
players.
“On defense, we had our younger
kids in most of the time,” said
Rybak. “We intermingled juniors
and sophomores, since it could be
suicide to put in all sophomores
against veterans. Northwest is not
that bad of a team. It’s going to
take them a while to get used to our
conference.
Overcrowded
“Our object going into the game
was to give our young kids as much
experience as possible,”” Rybak
added. “They played and they did a
great job. I don’t like to name one
or two because if I overlook some-
one that would be harmful. I can
only tell you that our coaching staff
went over our players and we have
26 kids coming back, who have
played in key positions. By the end
of the season, they will be good
players and next year, we're going
to turn the tables on a lot of our
opponents.” These sophomores are
an aggressive bunch with a lot of
potential. We’ve been brining them
along all year.”
Neither team moved the ball well
during the first quarter. Northwest
had a total of only 85 yards rushing
for the entire game, posing their
only threat in the third quarter
when they moved the ball from
their own 45-yard line to the Moun-

Truly, one of the
of the
most exciting
taineers’ 30-yard, but Dallas quart-
erback Tim Lyons ended their drive
when he intercepted.
Dallas scored its first touchdown
late in the second period when
Lyons connected with Mark Rami-
rez on an 80 yard touchdown pass.
Lyons added two points by running
the ball in on the conversion.
Dallas offense moved the ball, but
failed to score when they fumbled
near the end zone.
Gerry Mihalick, playing his first
game in several weeks due to an
injury, turned in an excellent play
when, on a bad snap from center, he
grabbed the ball and threw to Mike
Janosik for 13 yards.
On their next possession, Dallas
lost an opportunity to score when
Jeff Spudis, aided by a 15-yard
penalty against Northwest, carried
the ball to the Rangers’ 16-yard line.
Two plays later, Dallas fumbled the
ball and Northwest recovered.
With 3:30 remaining in the first
half, Rangers Joe Fontinelli’s 29-

yard field goal try failed. It was two
plays later that Lyons passed to
Ramirez for the score.
With Dallas leading 8-0, neither
team was able to score in the third
period, but Northwest lost its last
chance to score in the fourth
quarter when the Rangers had the
ball on their own 11-yard line with
6:01 on the clock.
The Rangers Quarterback Rob
Stevens’ pass was intercepted by
Mountaineer Mike Janosik on the
Rangers 17-yard line and he took it
in for the score to give Dallas a 14-0
lead. Mihalick kicked the extra
point to give the Mountaineers their
final 15-0 win.
The Mountaineers net yards for
the day were 223 yards, 119 rushing
and 117 yards passing with a loss of
about seven. Northwest had only 70
yards rushing and 35 passing.

The Lake-Lehman Knights took a
14-6 lead into the lockerrom at half
time last Saturday, but the Comets
of Crestwood tied it up in the fourth
quarter with 8:39 remaining on the
clock. In an exciting game, it
appeared the game would end in a
tie until, with only 17 seconds on the
clock, T. Willie Cadwalader went in
from the 1-yard line with a touch-
down to give the Knights a hard-
fought 20-14 win.
Both teams played great defense
throughout the afternoon and Knight
Chris Van Gorder was the work
horse for the Knights as he carried
26 times for 99 yards, scored two
touchdowns and ran the ball into the
endzone for a two point conversion.
The Knights went on the board in
the first quarter when on their first
possession they drove 58 yards with
Van Gorder carrying for long runs.
He climaxed the drive with a 13

drove to the Knights 23 yard line but
Quarterback Jim McGovern’s pass
on fourth down was dropped and the
Knights took over.
The Knights used only four min-
utes to drive downfield 77 yards
from where Van Gorder went over
from the five yard line into the
endzone, then added two extra
points on a run into the endzone
with 2:41 remaining on the clock.
Crestwood did not give up and on
their possession Dean Ambosie’s 28-
yard run and a 15-yard penalty
against the Knights took them into
Lake-Lehman territory. McGovern
threw two incomplete passes but on
third down he connected with
Ambosie on a screen pass, who took
it down the sideline for a score. The
kick for the extra point failed and
the half ended with the Knights in
the lead 14-6.
Neither team was able to move
the ball in the third period against
tight defense and the period beca
the punters exchange between g
Gorder and Brad Rinehimer.
On Lake-Lehman’s first punt in
the final quarter, Crestwood got to
Van Gorder and the interior of the
line blocked the kick. Comet Tom
Plassoon picked up the ball and
went 36 yards for a score with 8:39
on the clock. McGovern connected
with Rinehimer in the endzone for
two points and the score was tied at
14-14.
It was the Knights’ turn to refuse to
give up and, using 19 plays, they
drove 75 yards to score the winning
touchdown when Cadwalader went
in. The try for extra point failed.
The Knights will play the Wyo-
ming Area Warriors Saturday at 2
p.m. at the Lake-Lehman Stadium.
