FOR Locals ‘run’ to States By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Correspondent Three Back Mountain high school cross country runners will compete in the state competition at Lehigh University this weekend. Dallas High School senior Amy Aston competed in Division AAA competition in Districts at Frances Slocum last year and placed second behind Honesdale’s Renee Robbins, came in first this season in Division AA in 17:19, :04 less time than Robbins who ran in AAA again this season. Aston’s closest competitor in AA was Meyers Lorrie Gardner who came in second with 18:43. Aston, who gave up field hockey, one of her favorite sports, this year to concentrate on running, was only :05 behind the record set by Meyers’ Mary Wazeter 17:12 set in 1979. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Aston, Amy said that when she competed in states last year she finished 16th among approximately 260 runners. This year when Dallas High School faculty member Louis Isaac told her she had the build for a long distance runner, she decided to give up field hockey and other fall and winter sports and concen- trate on running. This is only her second year in running and she is now running five to 10 miles every evening. During the summer she ran about 50 miles every week. Dallas junior Mark Wright, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Wright, fin- ished fifth in Division AAA in 15:36, :33 behind Abington Heights’ first place finisher Mark McLane with a time of 15:03. This is Wright’s second year as a member of the Dallas High School Cross Country team, having run last year under Coach Lou Isaacs. This year’s coach is Donald Hosey of Franklin Township, who had to build a team around a nucleus of three runners, most of the others having graduated. Wright said he became interested in running through Isaacs who told him he looked like a runner. He also is a member ofthe high school track team and participates in the high jump, two mile run and the two mile relay. His best time since starting to run was in the districts at Frances Slocum Park this year. The third student to enter the state competition is John Rosen- crans of Lake-Lehman. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Rosen- crans, Jr. of Mooretown. A sophomore, this is John’s first year on the high school cross-coun- try team coached by Ed Narkiew- icz. He finished sixth in the boys AA Built to your spec’s Area game. Division in this year’s districts with a time of 15:48. His fastest time over a course this season was 15:25 but he hopes to better it at states. He plan to continue running during the winter and go out for the track team in the spring, which is also coached by Narkiewicz. He will try out for the pole vault, the mile and two mile runs. Rosencrans has two brothers and a sister, but he is the first to become a member of the school’s cross country team. His older brother, Wayne, was a member of the varsity wrestling team; his sister, Sue, is a member of the band; and his younger brother is a member of the Back Mountain Ele- mentary Wrestling team. The three students will leave Friday for Bethlehem to prepare for Saturday’s state competition.
