Health Fair held
at Mercy Center
Health Fair ’84, sponsored by the
Wilkes College senior nursing stu-
dents at Mercy Center in Dallas was
conducted on October 18.
Services offered included blood
pressure screening, nutritional
information, glaucoma screening by
the Association of the Blind, hearing
screening by the Audiological Asso-
ciation, dental hygiene by LCCC
students, diabetes screening by the
American Diabetes Association, and
information on Adult Day Care by
Leader East.
Under the supervision of Wilkes
College nursing instructor, Ann
Russin, the following senior nursing
students participated in the pro-
gram: Dave Hill, Randy Hoeppner,
Mike Homishak, Nancy Novitski,
Judy skibicki, Barb Hillard, Tracey
Day, Tracey Kelly; Kathy Mooney,
Linda Zanolina.
Refreshments were provided to
the approximately 50 senior citizens
who attended the fair.
ST. THERESE’S ALTAR AND ROSARY SOCIETY
held its annual Birthday Tea last week in the church
auditorium. A large number of women enjoyed the
beautifully decorated tables. Entertainment was pro-
vided by ‘“The Welsh Cookies”, Shirley Mahle, Helen
Dymond and Elaine St. Clair. Ruth Youngblood was
chairman of the tea; Dot Glenn was co-charirman.

A BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISH goes to
Jacob H. Gabel, formerly of Chase, now a resident of
St. Stanislaus Kostka Medical Center, Nanticoke.
Jacob Celebrated his 99th birthday last week.
Son of the late Adam and Margaret Scheidel Gabel,
Jacob is a former employee of Sordoni Construction
Co., Forty Fort.
‘He has three sons, Paul, Kingston; George, Fern-
brook; Charles, Shavertown and a daughter Joan
Gabel LaTamus, Wilkes-Barre. Two sons, Leo and
Harold are deceased. Mr. Gabel has 37 grandchildren
and 40 great-grandchildren. His wife Marie, died in
1966.
The Medical Center feted Mr. Gabel with a party
with immediate family members present.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ENJOY a nice evening
out keep in mind the Dallas Area Federated Woman’s
Club wine and cheese party October 27 from 8 p.m. to
midnight. The party will be held at Penn State campus
to benefit the Back Mountaint Library and Scholarship
Fund.
President, Mrs. Frank Smaka has announced that
Mrs. Frank Rollman and Mrs. Robert Rowlands will
serve as co-chairmen of the event. The club is asking
a $15 donation. To purchase a ticket‘contact Theresa
Thompson, Barbara Maculloch or Maryann Daily. The
public is invited.

CONGRATULATIONS TO REV. JOHN J. BENDIK,
chaplain of College Misericordia who will be honored
by Mount Saint Mary’s College, Emmitsburg, Mary-
land, for eight years of service on its Board of
Trustees. Father Bendik will be cited at the annual
Holiday Inn, Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Larksville, Father Bendik is a graduate of
Central Catholic High School, St. Meinrad College,
Indiana, and holds a master of divinity degree from
St. Meinrad School of Theology. He was ordained to
the priesthood on May 27, 1967 by the Most Rev. J.
Carroll McCormick. He has served as assistant pastor
of St. Matthew’s Church, East Stroudsburg, before

being named Director of Campus Ministry at East
Stroudsburg State College in 1970. His assignment at
College Misericordia began in September 1981.

TWO BISHOP O’REILLY HIGH SCHOOL STU?
DENTS 'have been designated Commended Students in
the 1985 Merit Program. Megan Flynn and Paul
Hartzel, both of Dalllas, placed in the top five percent
of over one million participants in the 30th annual
competition and will receive a letter of commendation
in honor of outstanding promise for future academic
success.
Megan, daughter of Judge Joseph and Dr. Dorothy
Flynn is currently attending Boston College under its
early admission plan for high school juniors where she
Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hartzel, Dallas is
currently a senior at Bishop O’Reilly High School.

MR. AND MRS. HARRY P. BECK, Harveys Lake
observed thier 40th wedding anniversary Saturday.
The Becks were married in Holy "Trinity Church,
Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Their attendants were
Mrs. Marie Lantz, sister of the bride and Andrew
Lantz, brother-in-law.
Mrs. Beck is the former Madeline Youngblood,
daughter of the late George and Mary Youngblood,
Kingston. Mr. Beck is the son of the late Harry C. and
Carrie Beck, Shavertown and Harveys Lake.
Mr. Beck is retired from American Home Products.
Mrs. Beck is retired from the Naval Sea System
Command, Washington, D.C.
They are the parents of three children: Mrs.
Richard (Maria) Agans, Gainesville, Va.; Donald,
Upper Marlboro, Md.; and Ronald, LaureL, Md. They
have five grandchildren.
The Becks celebrated their anniversary with a trip
to Williamsburg, Va. and a family dinner.

goblins again. Since the terrible scares with candy

of years, I have
been giving McDonald's certificates. (Burger King
also has them available.) Stickers and pencils also
make nice, safe treats, as does the old standby, pocket
change. Please warn your child not to eat any treats
until you have checked them. And make sure they
carry a flashlight and wear proper clothing so that
drivers can see Halloweeners walking along streets.

Eugene D. Gorski, M.D., an asso-
ciate with the Geisinger Medical
Group in Wilkes-Barre and a staff
physician at the Geisinger Family
Health Center in Dallas, has
recently been notified by the Ameri-
can Academy of Family Physicians
that he passed his Board examina-
tions and is certified in Family
Practice.
Dr. Gorski earned his undergrad-
uate degree in biological sciences
and his medical degree from Hahne-
mann Medical College in Philadel-
program in family medicine with
the Wyoming Valley Family Prac-
tice Center.
A member of the American Medi-
emy of Family Practice, and the
Luzerne County Medical Society,
Dr. Gorski is trained in hypnosis by
the American Society of Clinical
Hynosis.
Recently appointed co-medical
director of the Back Mountain Par-
amedic Unit, Dr. Gorski resides in
Dallas with his wife, Patricia.
