Ee Many adults have stereotypical views of today’s youth. Just the mere mention of ‘‘teen-ager’’ brings on thoughts of selfishness, uncaring, and trouble-making. The Outlet Youth Group, of Harveys Lake, had the opportunity this summer to prove that some of those stereo- types are false. W This past summer was an extremely active one for the youth group, and through its activities, it was able to show that at least some of today’s youth really do care. The youth group, led Dy Viola Rossman and Lawrence and Iva Killian, began its busy summer soon after the kids got out of school in June. The first event on their agenda was a celebrity auction and balloon release to benefit the Children’s Hospital at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. The auction, which took six months to plan took place at Boscov’s Department Store on June 21. approximately 80 items to be auc- tion off. The group also received recognition from Anne Murray, Lee Majors, Olivia Newton-John, and other top celebrities for their work. The balloon release held in con- junction with the auction resulted in a win for Miss Dana Lee Honeywell, a four-year-old from New Whales, Pa. The winning balloon traveled some 15 miles before finding its resting place. Miss Honeywell was presented a $25.00 gift certificate from Boscov’s as her prize. All in all, the auction and balloon release raised $275.00 for the Chil- dren’s Hospital. The youth group also held a talent contest that same afternoon to bene- fit the Youth Rescue Fund, a national organization that helps youth in crisis. Seventeen contes- tants competed in trhee age cate- gories for first, second and third place plaques. Judges for the com- petition were: Frank E. Warren, from WILK; Lisa Bebey, a teen board model; and Don Tandler, from Q102 Radio. Funds raised from this event totaled $150.00. Since 1946 this program has made it possible for schools throughout the nation to serve wholesome and nutritious low-cost lunches to students every school day. These lunches make an impor- tant contribution to good nutrition, which is vital to your child’s mental and physical growth. Across the United States, schools will be celebrating National School Lunch Week from October 14020, 1984. The theme for this year’s National School Lunch Week cele- bration is ‘‘Champions of Nutri- tion.” during this week we will be serving the Universal Manu-Mara- thon Spaghetti, Maestro Tossed Salad, Blue Ribbon fruit Choices, Honor Roll, Honey-Oatmeat-Raisin cookie, and TLC Milk. This manu is the same lunch served in more than 90,000 schools this week across the United States. To help you and members of the community learn more about the school lunch program, we invite you to join your student(s) for lunch during National School Lunch Wek. Guests will accompany their stu- dents through the serving line and pay regular price for lunch (Student Lunches $.85; Adult Lunches $1.40). . Our school lunchrooms are more than just filling stations for empty stomachs. Student participation in the school lunch program is impor- tant because it not only supplies one-third of your child’s daily nutri- tional requirements, but also intro- duces your child maintain a strong body and an alert mind. Wilkes-Barre Area Vocational- Technical School officials have learned first hand from state Audi- tor General Al Benedict that a state audit, often associated with criti- cism, can bring good news, too. “The fine job done by Wilkes- Barre Area Vo-Tech officials and personnel in managing school operations deserves public recogni- tion,” Benedict said in releasing an audit report. “We found compliance with the Public School Code and adherence to sound accounting pro- cedures.” The report of the Luzerne County vo-tech school released recently the two years ended June 30, 1982 con- tained no criticism or recommenda- tions. The prior state audit report was similary free of violations. School districts which jointly operate the Wilkes-Barre Area vo- tech are Crestwood Area, Hanover Area, Nanticoke Area, Pittston Area and Wilkes-Barre Area.
