- ‘Fairly’ successful
The 1984 Jerry Lewis Labor Day
Telethon raised $32,074,566 to benefit
the Muscular Dystrophy Association
(MDA). Greater Northeastern
aired locally on WNEP, Channel 16,
showed their support by pledging
$426,594.
“The people of the Greater North-
eastern Pennsylvania area went all
out again this year to help ‘Jerry’s
’
kids,’ said Lawrence Leonard,
president of the Greater Northeast-
ern Pennsylvania Area Chapter of
the voluntary health agency. ‘‘Their
generous support of the Telethon
will help lead us to the treatments
and cures the Association is seek-
ing.”
Broadcast live from Caesars
Palace, the marathon show was
hosted by MDA National Chairman
Jerry Lewis, backed by Telethon
anchorman Ed McMahon and co-
hosts Sammy Davis, Jr. and Casey
Kasem. “A show like the Telethon is
a‘true test of talent, and the gentle-
man who worked by my side proved
that theirs is limitless,” said Lewis
of the trio.
Lewis also praised the nearly 200
“Love Network” stations across the

Mark A. Raspen, 15, of Sweet
Valley, died Sept. 5 as a result of
injuries suffered in a motorcycle
accident earlier in the day.
