Kelly Wandel’s unassisted goal at
the 16:40 mark of the first half was
enough to give the Lady Knights a
win over the Dallas field hockey
team Friday. Goalkeeper Cindy
Slocum stopped the Dallas offense
while her teammates went on to
trounce the Mountaineers, 7-0.
The Lady Knights scored only two
goals in the first half, with Susie
Slocum scoring, unassisted, at
27:50. :
_ Leading 2-0, at the opening of the
second half, Wandel and Slocum
the second half as their team went
wild and scored five goals to pull
the 7-0 upset over Dallas, last year’s
district championship team.
Slocum scored unassisted 4:49
into the second half and Wendel
scored her second goal unassisted
14:40 into the second half. Sharon
Cross, assisted by Slocum, scored
21:15 into the half, B.J. Sorber,
assisted by Wandel, scored 23:30
into the half; and Sandy Dicton,
assisted by Donna DeGennaro,
scored 25:51 into the second half.
Dallas had six shots at goal, Lake-
Lehman had nine. Dallas Mountai-
neers had eight corners, Lake-
Lehman, seven. Dallas goalie,
Karen Wall had six saves and Lake-
Lehman’s Cindy Slocum had seven
saves.
The loss dropped the: Mountai-
neers to 1-1 with the Lady Knights
moving to 2-0.
In the opening league match on
September 5, the Dallas Mountai-
neers blanked Bishop O’Reilly, 5-0,
sparked by Jill Radzinski’s three
goals. Linda King and Eileen Nagy

Radzinski, assisted by Leigh
into the first half, and her second
goal at 14:45, unassisted, into the
first half. She scored her third goal
at 15:45, unassisted, in the second
half.
King scored 16:30, unassisted, in
the first half and Nagy scored at
22:58, assisted by Long, in the first
half.
After the Lake-Lehman match,
Dallas Coach Robyn Jones said she
was disappointed and thoroughly
frustrated with her girls.
“They watched the Lake-Lehman
girls play field hockey while they
(Dallas) didn’t,”’ Jones said. ‘My
girls did not attack but retreated. At
the half it was only 2-0 but the girls
weren’t rushing. In the second half,
I took out the starting 11 and put in
my jayvees and the Lake-Lehman
Arch rivals meet
Any athletic match between arch-rivals usually causes some
nailbiting and hair-raising. Here, in the photo at left,
Candyce Fike, assistant field hockey coach at Dallas, shows
what any coach goes through when things just aren't going
the way you'd like them to. The photo at right shows Lake-
Lehman coach Jean Lipski offering some words of advice to
the Lady Knights while the center photo has Lehman's Lori
Lopasky, left, chasing an unidentified ‘Dallas stickwoman
downfield.
girls ran right through them. The
Knights played as a team, my girls
played as 11 individuals. The fact
that we are young and lack experi-
ence is no excuse. If the varsity
girls can’t follow instructions, I'll
try the others.”
Jones said she was very
impressed with Lake-Lehman’s
team and is looking forward to
meeting them again the second time
around.
Knights Coach Jean Lipski said
she was happy with the way her
girls played, and was also pleas-
antly surprised. In the past, Lipski
said her players were tense when
they went against Dallas, but such
was not the case this season.
“They were'loose at practice the
day before,” she said, ‘And eager
to play. They had an excellent
-mental attitude. In the game, they
were aggressive and kept going for
the ball.”
Lipski said the secret to Lehman's
success to date is that the girls have
shared in the playing and put forth
great team effort. Three of the girls
who scored in the second half were
subs off the bench.
The Knights have three tough
matches this week going against
Valley West, Tunkhannock and
SL
Crestwood. i
