Questions coach’s decisions DEAR EDITOR: I am writing in response to the article on Joe Kelley, (which appeared recently in The Dallas Post). I agree that Back Mountain All-Stars were a great bunch of boys - young boys in their formative and impressiona- ble years with a zest, eagerness and elation that is innate in that age group. With the sterling pitching displayed by the Back Mountain All-Stars, there was no reason why all the players could not have been included in those first six games (68 runs to 2 runs). After a 20-1 victory, I questioned him (Kelley) as to why all the players had not participated. His reply was, “I didn’t want to disrupt the continuity.”” I should have seen the handwriting on the wall at that point. This fellow was a “winner” in more ways than one. My wife, my daughter, my son, two friends of Darren’s (who was a member of the All-Star team) and I made a trip to Potter McKean, a trip of four hours. The score was 7-0 at the end of three innings, 10-1 at the end of five innings and my son didn’t even get in for one inning. What a miserable four hour journey home! Other parents of the ‘subs’ attended this game to support the team as well as their individual sons and their sons didn’t even play one inning. The opposing coach made wholesale changes in catcher and would only play if the No. 1 catcher wil injured. That logic totally baffles me. Darren did play in the Avoca game for six innings. Kelley said, ‘Under tournament rules, it made it impossible to get him in any more than he did.” What tournament rule states you have only one game catcher? Darren was generously allowed in the heat, dirt and humidity of a three-hour practice session to risk any injury there. Do you realize how arduous a catching session is? My son went to Camp Acahela for one week and I drove up every day to Boy Scout camp, got him and brought him home to practice. He was tired from activities at Scout camp. At no time did I believe he was No. 2 and only had an opportunity to play if No. 1 got injured. Darren did not miss a practice session or a game. But I believed he would get to participate since Mr. Kelley said he owed him one. It’s interesting that the No. 2 catcher wa the L.A.D. Dodgers who are currently in first place. The No. 1 catcher played on the sixth place Phillies who, strangely enough, had our irrepressible Mr. Kelley as a manager. The unfortunate part of all of this is that it didn’t have to be. All could have participated and felt good about being part of this great team. CLARENCE J. MICHAEL Wilkes-Barre Fats By LEE L. RICHARDS Sports Columnist CLIPBOARD NOTES: — Couldn’t help being impressed with West German swimmer Michael Gross. He's 6-7 and can churn up the water. — Wrestling hero and Gold medal winner Jeff Blatnick (winner in Greco-Roman) won his biggest match off the ; mat by defeating cancer two years ago. — Was there every any doubt our Olympic boxing team could dominate the games? — No one in the games showed me more aggressiveness than Mary Lou Retton and Mitch Gaylord with their gymnastic routines. They sure did go for the gold! — How many sports buffs will be going through a withdraw period now that the Olympic Games are history? I will. — Pat Head Summitt, U. Tennes- see roundball coach, proved just how capable she really is when her women captured the gold medal for the USA. Even the football coaches at UT had nothing but high praise for her. She’s so highly organized and gets the most out of the talent at hand. — The summer recreation pro- gram at Lake-Lehman is one of the best in the school’s history partici- pation wise. It should benefit the athletes this coming school year. — It was good to visit with Ron Kelley, former Dallas grid standout, during recent golf tourney at Irem. Ron and his Dad made the champi- onship flight with a neat two-under par 70. They had it at five under at one time. They bowed in extra holes to finalists Wally Kuharcik and Ron Pieczynski. Ron was a rugged full- back for the Mountaineers. — I was somewhat surprised when Gary Ide and Brian Corbett weren’t in the title hunt. They just didn’t have any putts fall or they’d have been right there. Brian is a pur striker of the ball. — High scores in the Potentate’s Tournament has to be attributed to the lousy damp conditions. Rollie Schmidt and Ed Hennigan, neither members of the Irem Golf Associa- tion, captured the title. Perhaps it’s about time for the golf committee at Irem to reevaluate the present structure of the tournament’s format. Maybe have an open divi- sion for Shriners that are not mem- bers of the Irem Golf Association. A large portion of the field are Shrin- ers but don’t belong to the Irem Golf Association. They are eligible simply because of being a Shriner. This is one of the few tournaments around that allows non-members of the golf association to participate. — A tip of the hat to Irem Pro Barry Fies and wife Sherry for the long hours they put in during the tournament. Asst. Pro Jimmy Smith did his usual splendid job and could qualify for a slot in the W-B Fats Golf Classic. — SEC grid fans will be interested to know that seven of the nine teams will open the season with new quarterbacks. : — Penn State fans will be delighted to learn that Alabama returns 16 of 22 starters. — Bruce Gover captured the annual Westmoreland Club Golf title recently at Irem Temple Country Club with a four-over par 76. It was Bruce’s best round of the season and he took the title away from Dave Davis. It didn’t help matters that Bruce was chairman of the tourney either! — Clarion assistant wrestling Coach Jack Davis was in for a brief vacation after spending most of the summer working the Golden Eagles’ wrestling camp. He was looking forward to some water skiing around Harveys Lake. Jack is one of the best around and is noted for his kite act, too. — Schoolboy football got under- way this week and it shapes up as an interesting year for both Dallas and Lake-Lehman. Both coaches have indicated to me that they expect to be competitive. — With the Potentate’s Golf Tour- nament over at Irem many of the golfers will be directing their atten- tion to the Sixth Annual Wilkes- Barre Fats Invitational Golf Clas- sic. We've tentatively scheduled the big day for Sunday, Sept. 30. Invita- tions will be mailed shortly to thoose players capable of handling the Red Course and the unique rules. — How about the huge crowds on hand to see our Back Mountain All- Star Little League game? It has to be one of the biggest to see a game of that type around here. Sorry, the outcome wasn’t better. — Many roundball fans upset with the Olympic coverage of the men’s team. It seems they break away just when our guys get on a roll. — If there was one team of ours that I wanted to capture the gold more than any other it was the women’s volleyball. They paid the gg price and did a heckuva job, but had to settle for the silver. China was superb and could really leap © which surprised me. ; — Ned Hartman threw this trivia question at me last week. Was tug- of-war an Olympic event? Yep! — I’ve had more college grid fans inquire about the upcoming season and how the TV deals will work now that the NCAA is out of the picture? To be quite honest, I’ve read about the matter as much as possible and I still don’t understand how it’s going to work. Some of the networks will be carrying some outstanding games, while CBS made a deal with the Big 10 and PAC 10 which will wind up with the lowest ratings. I know one thing some schools will get zilch while some of the more attractive teams will make some big bucks. — Speaking of the NCAA, I've gotta believe they’ve got too many rules which are simply outdated. The PIAA is a similar organization without the athletes’ best interest the chief purpose. — The talent on this USA round-,. ball team ranks it with the best tdi ever win the gold in the Olympic games.
