DENMON Staff Correspondent Members of of Back Mountain Junior Football teams are practicing daily in preparation for the opening of the Suburban League competition on Sunday, August 26. During the past week, approximately 75 mem- bers of the Dallas Cowboys and Kingston Town- ship Raiders teams of the Back Mountain Junior Football Club also held sbrimmages with West Side teams to help improve their offense and defense drills. Lehman Lions play in the Subur- ban League but they are not members of the Back Mountain Club. They have not yet held scrimmatges with other teams but plan to do so before the opening day of the league which is less than two weeks away. All three teams have cheerleading squads, who are practicing new cheers and pyraminds for this season’s games. Approximately 50 girls will be outfitted in uniforms the color of their area’s team. They are under the direction of dedicated volunteers, some of them having been advisors for at least seven years. The Cowboys dressed in blue and white and the Raiders in uniforms of black an gray have A and B squads, the B squad comprised of the younger boys playing the first game each Sunday, and the A squad made up of 11 to 13 year old members playing the second game. The Lions in uniforms of black and gold have divided their 50 members into three squads, A the olderboys, B slightly younger, and C the young- est members. Eight teams will compete against one another in the Suburban League this season including the Cowboys, Raiders, Lions, Newport Nutcrackers, Northeast Crusaders, Northwest Jets, Nanticoke Rams and the Larksville Green Waves. Dallas and Kingston Township will use Dallas Senior High school field as their home gridiron; Lehman Lions home field will be Lake-Lehman High School stadium. Newport Nutcrackers home field will be the Newport Recreation Park, Northeast, the Dan Flood field in Wilkes-Barre; Northwest Jets, Northwest High School field; Larksville’s home field will be the West Side Tech field and Nanticoke’s home field will be the John S. Fine High School’s field. The league will open Aug. 26 and the closing date will be Oct. 21 when Dallas and Kingston Township will play for the “Gold Football” in the Back Mountain’s championship game. John Opalicki, Wiliam Jesse, Sr. and Bill Kasmarek coach the B team. Cheerleader advisor is Diana Olsen. Gerry Gizenski and Mike Annetta coach the Lions A team. Clint Murdock coaches the B team an Bob Sayre and Dave Covert coach the C team. Carol Smith is head cheerleader advisor. Officials of the legue are not certain but they estimate the league is approximately 12 years old. At one time, Dallas, Kingston Township teams and Lehman were all in one club but in later years Lehman withdrew.
