DENMON Staff Correspondent “They are a great group of boys,” said Joseph Kelley, manager of the Back Mountain National All Stars, following the locals’ 5-2 loss to Milton Saturday afternoon at the Dallas field. “After the game, I sat them down in the dugout and told them they had nothing to be ashamed of. They gave their best throughout our entire tournament competition and I'm proud of them. They won the District flag and you can’t take that away from them.” This year’s All Stars were only the third Back North-South Tier title and Kelley predicts that Back Mountain residents will be hearing more of these boys in the future because, he says, they are great ballplayers. Kelley was concerned going into Saturday’s game that the boys might be getting tired. They were all 12-year olds, with the exception of 11-year old Eric Paczewski, and they put in a lot of hours. With Kelley, Coach Jack Tinner, staff assistants, Joe Konigus and Jay May, and scorekeeper Charlotte Kelley, they all put in at least three hours of practice every day. “It was a great team effort by all of the boys and my staff as well,” said Kelley. In the game with Potter-McKean at Couders- port last Wednesday, Keith Schultz did the pitching for the local All Stars as the Back Out at first the team’s power hitter, and lead off batter, started off with a homerun on the first pitch in the first inning. The big guns in hitting that day were B.J. Mannix, 3-4; Bob Barbacci 2-4; J.J. Konigus 2-4, one of th nm a three run homer; and Todd Sallo 3-4. According to Kelley, Sallo was the team’s No. One hitter and best as leadoff. Kelley said the team had a few problems in the Wednesday game, but nothing major. It was a tiring trip and the weather was very humid which took a lot out of the boys. In the Milton game, Kelley said his boys were flat. He also said that Milton’s pitcher Mike McLaughlin threw his boys off balance with his assortment of pitches because he never threw two consecutive pitches the same way which puzzled the Back Mountain boys. Errors played a major role in Milton's victory since Sallo was pitching a no-hit game until the fourth inning when Milton got two homeruns. He gave up only one more hit with Milton getting their other three runs on errors. Schultz, who went 2-4 on the day, was the leading hitter for the Nationals. Brian Hampel and Jeff Tinner drove out homeruns for the team’s two runs. “We had such an excellent group of ball players I feel bad that some of them didn’t get as much playing time as they should, but I had to make decisions before each game and I made what I thought was best for the team,” said Kelley. Dallas Post/Ed Campbell Kelley said he couldn’t play Darren Michi, to. Under tournament rules, it made it impossi- ble to get him in any more than he did. He had to save him in the event Mannix was injured. Michaels was excellent All Star material, Kelley said, and he was super the way he supported the team. Ed Reabuck came along strong and Eric May was Kelley’s rock on second base. Kelley said May was captain and did a great job keeping things together. Jeff Tinner didn’t play a lot, but most people didn’t realize he was injured. Kelley’s plan was to rotate Tinner in various infield positions, but in the first game he had to take Tinner out. He sat out the second game, played the third, then sat out the fourth. Dave Catrambone also was injured as he pulled a cartilage and didn’t get a lot of playing time. He was the team’s utility infielder and a super ballplayer, according to Kelley. Kelley said Paczewski played very little but he also had an injury. ‘“He’s a super ball player and he will be back next year,” said Kelley. ‘All but Eric will be with the 13-year-old Teeners next season and you can bet you will hear a lot about them. If they continue to play, they will be great high school players. “It’s been a great season and we had outstand- ing support from parents, kids, and all of our fans,” Kelly continued. “I'm looking forward to next year.” Dallas Post/Ed Campbell “ In the Bi-County Baseball League, Beaumont A picked up a 3-1 victory over Noxen with Custer earning the B.J. scores BJ.
