SMITH, JR., son of Donald E. and
Helen Smith of 144 Main St., Dallas,
has arrived for duty at Ramstein
Air Base, West Germany.
Smith, a communications and
electronics systems officer with
1964th Communications Group, was
previously assigned in Washington.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD
CLASS BENJAMIN R. RUSSELL,
son of Benjamin E. and ruth Crof-
chick of Route 3, Dallas, recently
returned from a five-month deploy-
ment to the Indian Ocean and the
North Arabian Sea.
He is a member of Tactical Elec-
tronic Warfare Squadron-136,
embarked aboard the aircraft car-
rier USS Midway.
~ More than half of the deployment
was spent in the Arabian Sea near
the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring that
this vital seza line of communica-
tion stayed open. While there, the
squadron participated in several
open ocean exercises with friendly
and allied naval and air forces.
“On the trip home, the squadron
visited the ports of Singapore; Pat-
taya, Thailand; and Subic Bay,
Republic of the Phillippines.

has graduated from the U.S. Air
Force technical instructor course at
Lowry Air Force Base, Colo.
During the course, students were
taught techniques for planning and
teaching courses in career fields of
practical experience. They also
earned credits toward an associate
degree through the Community col-
lege of the Air Force.

promotions
Pennsylvania Gas and Water
Company announces the promotion
of five staffers in the accounting
and data processing departments.
Word of the promotion was made
by John F. Kell, vice-president and
controller of the Wilkes-Barre-based
natural gas and water utility.
Among these is Jeffrey Besecker,
who has been promoted to senior
programmer, data processing. The
Dallas native is a 1982 graduate of
Wilkes College with a B.S. in Com-
puter Science and Math. Jeffrey
began his association with the com-
pany in 1982 as a programmer. He
resides in Dallas.
Philip Ogren has been promoted
to project manager, financial infor-
mation systems, data processing.
He started with PG&W in 1980 as an
analyst-programmer in the data
processing department. Mr. Ogren
holds a B.S. degree in accounting
from Wilkes College, class of 1979.
He and his wife, Lynn, reside in
Kingston.
Jane Williams, a native and resi-
dent of Wilkes-Barre, has been pro-
moted to the pesition of program-
mer in the consumer affairs
systems development group of the
company’s data processing depart-
ment. Ms. Williams is a 1976 gradu-
ate of College Misericorida, Dallas,
with a B.S. in elementary education.
She began her career with PG&W
as a customer information analyst
in 1976. Ms. Williams resides in
Wilkes-Barre and is pursuing
studies in data processing at King’s.

Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island,
S.C. '
During the 11-week training cycle,
he learned the basics of battlefield
survival. He was introduced to the
typical daily routine that he will
experience during his enlistment
and studied the persenal and profes-
sional standards traditionally exhib-
ited-by Marines.
He participated in an active phys-
ical conditioning program and
gained proficiency in a variety of
miliary skills, including first aid,
rifle marksmanship and close order
drill. Teamwork and self-discipline
were emphasized throughout the
training cycle.
PVT. RICHARD D. ZIMMER-
MAN, son of Herbert R. and Patri-
cia M. Zimmerman of Rural Route
5, Shavertown, has completed one
station unit training (OSUT) at the
U.S. Army Infantry Schol, Fort
Benning, Ga.
OSUT is a 12-week period which
combines basic combat training and
advanced individual training.
The training included weapons
qualifications, squad tactics, patrol-
ling, landmine warfare, field com-
munications and combat operations.
Completion of this course qualifies
the soldier as a light-weapons infan-
tryman and as an indirect-fire crew-
man.
Soldiers were taught to perform
any of the duties in a rifle or mortar
squad.

AIRMAN ANDREW S. HULES,
son of Fred L. and Patricia J. Hules
of Rural Route 2, Dallas, has been
assigned to Fort Leonard Wood,
Mo., after completing Air Force
basic training.
During the six weeks at Lackland
Air Force Base, Texas, the airman
studied the Air Force mission, orga-
nization and customs and received
special training in human relations.
In addition, airmen who complete
basic training earn credits toward
an associate degree in applied sci-
ence through the Community Col-
lege of the Air Force.
The airman will now receive spe-
cialized instruction in the civil engi-
neering field.
He is a 1983 graduate of Lake-
Lehman High School, Lehman.
MRS. GERTRUDE WILSON, a
resident of Dallas for 70 years, has
moved to 464 S. Franklin St, Apt.
303, Wilkes-Barre. Mrs. Barbara
White has joined Mrs. Wilson at her
new address.

DONALD SHERMAN DICKSON
Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald S.
Dickson, Box 211, RD 1, Dallas, was
among a number of Luzerne County
students who recently attended ori-
entation sessions for incoming
freshmen. and transfer students at
Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
Dickson plans to major in Com-
puter Science.

EDWIN MARK JOHNSON
received a Doctor of Medicine
degree from Hahnemann University
of Philadelphia. At commencement,
he received academic distinctions in
medicine.
Dr. Johnson, a resident of Dallas,
will complete an internal medicine
residency at Hahnemann University
Hospital. While a student at Hahne-
mann, Dr. Johnson was a member
of Alha Omega Alpha, the medical
honor society, and received letters
of commendation in medicine and
surgery. He is a member of the
sixth graduating group of students
in a pioneer program of medical
education, the Wilkes-Hahnemann
MD-Pa (Medical Development-
Pennsylvania) Program. It was
designed to provide primary care
physicians for underserved areas of
the state.
He is a 1984 graduate of Wilkes
College, Wilkes-Barre, where he
graduated cume ladue with a Bach-
elor of Science degree. In 1977, Dr.
Johnson graduated from Dallas
Senior High School, Dallas.
His parents, Edwin L. and Lee
Ann Johnson, reside in Dallas.

MONICA A. FLYNN, of 18 Mara-
bee Ave., Dallas, is among 473
Lafayette College students who
have been named to the second
semester Dean’s List at that col-
lege.
Each of the students was required
to achieve at-least a 3.45 semester
grade average out of a possible 4.0.

ELIZABETH REESE, of Dallas,
is among 17 University of Scranton
students majoring in human
resources and rehabilitation coun-
seling who have been assigned to
serve five-week summer internships
at various health and social services
agencies.
Ms. Reese will serve her intern-
ship at\General Rehabilitation Serv-
ices in Kingston.

can Legion Post 672, where he is a
Post Commander, and a member of
the Home Association Board of
Directors, Past President of the
Dallas Lions, Past Senior Vice com-
mander of the District 12, American
Legion, and a member of the Dallas
Borough Police Civil Service Com-
mission.
Grand Knight Buckley has been a
member of the Knights of Colum-
bus, since 1950. He resides with his
wife Jean, at 45 Davenport St.,
Dallas and have on son James, A
Warrant Officer with 402nd M.P.
Battalion of Wilkes Barre. They
have two grand children.

Mr.; 6-8, Littlle Miss and Mr.; 9-11,
Young Miss; 12-14, Junior Miss and
15-up, Senior Miss.
Local winners will represent this
area and compete for state titles.
