Dallas Post / George Poynton Back Mountain National made it two in a row as Beth Finn pitched a no-hitter to lead the locals over Mountaintop 10-0 for Back Moun- tain’s second straight District 16 Girls’ Senior Little League title. Finn struck out 13 and walked just one in her no-hitter, and she benefit- ted from a bad day on the part of Mountaintop's pitchers and from an outstanding hitting attack by her own team. Mountaintop committed five errors behind Patsy Rinehimer anc Lori Pleiscott, who walked 16 Back Mountain batters between them. The champions scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second and four in the third to put the game away early. Joyce Tinner had two hits, includ- ing a double, to lead the Lady Dallas Post / George Poynton TOUGH! Noel Kuznicki, who caught the no-hitter, had three RBI, two of them coming in the second inning with a two-out double. Pam Coolbaugh drove in two of the three first-inning runs with a single. Pleiscott pitched most of the game in relief of Rineheimer, who walked 11 in three innings. Lori gave up no earned runs, but by then Mountaintop was too far behind to catch up. Mountaintop was victimized by the no-hitter, but it came close to hitting Finn a few times. In the second inning, Sue Butler laced a pitch to second base, but was called out at first. She also lined one right to the first baseman, who caught the stinger and stepped on the bag. Kathy Hudock nearly had a hit also when she bunted, made it to first safely, but was called out by the home plate umpire for interfer- ence. Marcie Turnie cracked a long fly to deep center, only to have it caught by a Back Mountain fielder. Lori Pleyscott, Kelly Kraynak, Karla Remensnyder and Lori Hol lock also just missed getting a hit. The closest Mountaintop came tc scoring was when Kathy Hudock got hit by a pitch, stole second and then ran to third on an infoeld out. in a row. ships. Back Mountain National Little League boys’ All-Star Team had its biggest test so far when it faced ‘always tough’ Nanticoke on their home field. A very confident Todd Sallo took the mound and quickly struck out the first two batters he faced. Drey- fus, Nanticoke's big gun, then came to the plate and he was gone looking at a third strike. Lead off hitter Sallo came up in the bottom of the inning and hit the Nanticoke pitchers first pitch out of the park to get the only run Back Mountain would need to win the ball game. Five more runs and no hit pitching by Sallo gave the Nationals a very sweet 6-0 win. Back Mountain added one more run in the first when B.J. Mannix slammed a double to score Eric May to make the score 2-0 in favor of Back Mountain. In the second, the only walk allowed by Sallo was erased when the next Nanticoke batter lined a hot-shot back to the mound, and Todd quickly threw to first for a double play. Back Mountain sewed the game up with three runs in the fourth. J.J. Straigis nailed a single and Sallo walked. One run was driven home by Eric May's double, and two more runs scored after a passed ball and a throwing error on the catcher. Sallo later drove in the sixth run with a double to center Next game for the Back Mountain team will be on Wednesday, August 1 at a site to be determined. A win in that game will have them playing on Friday, August 3. Back Mountain National got into that game and continued its quest for the district crown by downing Avoca 14-0 at the Pittston Twp. Little League field. The Avoca all- stars had the unpleasant task of facing “fire-baller’’ Keith Schultz on the mound who proved his worth by mowing down 15 batters while walk- ing only three. A two out sixth inning single was the only hit Schultz allowed on the night. Back Mountain set the tempo early in the game with homeruns and continued throughout sending the ball out of the park five times. Keith Schultz helped his own cause going one for three at the plate including a two-run homer. Todd Sallo, Eric May, Bob Barbacci and Brian Hampel each chipped in with homers to help the teams cause. Darren Michael came through with a double, and: Rich James scored twice after reaching base three times on walks. BY LEE L. Strange or Lanny Wadkins would cop the title, Strange was third and Lanny in the top 25, I couldn't imagine three players tying the course record of 63 set by Wadkins last year. Early leader Willie Wood, a 5-7 145-pounder, knocked down the flag the first round, while Wayne Levi turned the trick the second day. Levi's was something considering the wet conditions and steady rain. Finally, Ronnie Black, who trailed by seven shots going into the final round, shot lights out and won the title when Wood could muster only a 72, one over par. Media coverage was the best I've seen. : The performance by the various players was exceptional as so many carded below par rounds. While some people complained about many name pros not partici- pating, I told them the field was not lacking anything. The younger play- ers coming up are going to be great. Most have been through quality junior programs and the NCAA competition is keener every year. The equipment today is better and consequently the scores are going to be better.
