Boys and girls ages seven through
14 are encouraged to participate in
the Arthritis Foundation’s Mini
Olympics program co-sponsored by
the Wilkes-Barre and surrounding
area Recreation and Parks Depart-
ments on Wednesday, July 18, at 11
a.m., at Kirby Park in Kingston.
Registration is at 10:30 a.m. Funds
raised benefit programs of arthritis
education, service and research.
Rain date is July 19.
Events will be divided into three
age groups and include the Softball
Throw, Jumprope, 50-Yard Dash,
Football Throw, Frisbee Throw and
Broad Jump.

The Luzerne County Unit provides
many educational programs and
services including a free arthritis
club, seminars for physicians, self-
help courses and free literature. To
help support these programs, unit
volunteers will sponsor several fund
raising activities during the
Summer and Fall. The unit’s annual
“Battle of the Bands” will take
place October 7 and R.A.L.S. Asso-
ciates has been retained to solicit
advertisements for the program
booklet, which alone is expected to
raise significant funds for the
arthritis programs. R.A.L.S. will be
contacting many members of the
business and corporate community
in the Luzerne and Lackawanna
Counties areas for their support of
the Arthritis Foundation.

Mountaintop
Winning pitcher Eric Zimmerman
recorded 11 strikeouts and gave up
eight hits, including one solo home
run with three walks to give the
Back Mountain American All-Stars
an 11-10 victory over Mountaintop in
the first game of local Little League
All-Star play.
Ray Russin slammed a solo home
run in the fourth to keep the score
close at 7-5 at the end of four
complete innings. With the score of
1-56 with Mountaintop leading in the
bottom of the sixth, Zimmerman
Scott Brody nailed a three-run
homer, upping the score to 10-8.
With two outs, Mountaintop pitch-
ers issued two walks and hit a
batter to load the bases. Jack Jones
came to the plate and doubled off
the rightfield wall to tie the game.
Having been called because of dark-
ness, the game continued Sunday
evening at the ninth inning with
Mountaintop going three up and
three down.
In the bottom of that inning,
Zimmerman came to the plate with
two outs and a homer to win a very
exciting game.
Other hitters for Back Mountain
were John Masley going two for
four and Mike Bailey and C.J.
Kersey getting one hit apiece.
Photo correction
In the July 4 edition of The Dallas
Post, it was inadvertently reported
in a photo caption that members of
the Reds Minor League baseball
team were shown following a little
league game the previous week. The
photo actually depicted members of
the Reds Major League team who
had defeated the Pirates in that
game. Thanks to Chris Cummings
for bringing this to our attention.
