Tourism generated more
than $153 million into the
local economy in 1982 with
Luzerne ranking ninth

Two early homesteads,
dating to the 18th century,
provide a sense of the
regional heritage through
interpretative tours.
Nathan Denison House
is restored and furnished
to the period 1790-1820 and
offers visitors a view of
early life in the Wyoming
Valley.
The Swetland Home-
stead began as a settlers
cottage and through the °
years additions and
improvements were made.
Furnishings correspond to
the period of the additions
and overall the homestead
mirrors the growth of the
19th ‘Century Wyoming
Valley.
Interpretations at each
of the homes provide
background on the area’s
early history and the
arrival of Connecticut set-
tlers in 1769. Conflicting
land claims with Pennsyl-
vania resulted in the
Yankee-Pennamite Wars
before and after the Revo-
lutionary War.
Denison and Swetland
were members of the local
militia in the Revolution
and were involved in the
battle and massacre of
Wyoming, a monument to
which was erected near
the Swetland Homestead.
Denison House is open
weekdays 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. and weekends during
the summer from 1 to 4:30
p.m. The Swetland Home-
stead is open Thursday
through Sunday from noon
to 4 p.m. until Sept. 2.
