Duquesne University
Tamburitzans will per-
form October 28 at the
Luzerne County Folk Fes-
tival. The four day Festi-
val starts October 25 and
features a different major
performing group each
day. Ethnic food speciali-
ties, cultural displays,
demonstrations and con-
tinuous entertainment
highlight the annual event
at the 109th Armory,
Kingston.
There is much of the Old
World nestled in the hills
and valleys of northeast-
ern Pennsylvania.
Lured by the economic
promise of coal mining,
each group of people who
came here brought their
customs and traditions
with them.
There is still evidence of
the various national ori-
gins in special styles of
architecture, in unique
arts and crafts, in ethnic
foods and in the different
forms of music and dance.

dazzling annual presenta-
tion of food, crafts, cul-

Harvey’s Lake:
Sun/Fun Center
Harveys Lake is known
for variety; offering water
sports, an amusement
park, camping, restau-
rants and nightspots which
make it one of the most
complete recreation areas
in the state.
Harveys Lake is a natu-
ral, spring-fed lake - the
largest natural lake in
shore road surrounding
the lake offers a scenic
drive while providing
access for beating, water
skiing, scuba diving and
swimming.
One of the most popular
attractions at Harveys
Lake is Don Hanson’s
Amusement Park and
Camping Center with free
admission and parking.

Numerous public park
lands in and around Luz-
erne County offer scenic
and recreational attrac-
tions within short driving
distances of any part of
the County.
In Luzerne County
alone, there is a total of
50,344 acres of public rec-
reation lands. State game
lands account for 33,624
acres, the Fish Commis-
sion supervises 560 acres,
1,416 acres are state forest
lands and the remaining
14,744 acres are state park
lands. In addition, neigh-
boring counties provide
another 240,000 acres of
public recreational land.
RICKETTS GLEN
Park facilities are excel-
lent, most of them concen-
trated in the vicinity of
Lake Jean. A public swim-
ming beach, boat access,
extensive picnic facilities,
boating and food conces-
sions, family camping and
organized group tenting
areas are provided.
Over seven miles of
hiking trails parallel the
park’s streams as they
course their way down the
Glens and offer magnifi-
cent views of waterfalls
and forests containing
hemlocks as old as 500
years.
Ricketts Glen is accessi-
ble from Route 118 and is
less than an hours drive
from Wyoming Valley or
the Greater Hazleton area.
MOON LAKE
Picnicking, hiking,
swimming, boating and
fishing are some of the
many activities offered.
Complete facilities are
available for tent and
trailer camping. Located
on Route 29 in Plymouth
Township.
FRANCES SLOCUM STATE PARK
Located in Kingston
Township, a 165 acre lake
is its center of interest. A
swimming pool, boating,
fishing, picnicking and
hiking can be enjoyed in
the park.
There is historic interest
at the site of a rock shel-
ter which was used by
Indians in the abduction of
Frances Slocum for whom
FRANCIS E. WALTER DAM
The area is multi-pur-
pose: flood control, fish-
ing, boating, hiking and
picnicking. The dam is the
largest earth filled dam
east of the Mississippi
River. It can be reached
from Route 115 or Route
940 near Blakeslee.
HICKORY RUN STATE PARK
Located in Carbon
County, the Park is 20
miles northeast of Hazle-
ton and 22 miles southeast
of Wilkes-Barre. It has
picnic areas, hiking trails,
swimming, camping, hunt-
ing and fishing areas. One
of the main attractions of
the park is an unusual 30
acre boulder field believed
to have remained
unchanged for 20,000
