That’s why just anyone can’t assume the role and responsibilities of General Chairman for it. The chairman must have knowledge, stamina, compassion, patience, and, above all, authority. That’s the reason Attorney James R. Anzalone, of Lehman, was chosen for the job. Anzalone isn’t in. any way inexperi- enced at this type of thing. He served as General Chairman once before in 1974 while serving on the board of directors at the library. “I feel the greatest asset to a commu- nity is a strong library for the people,” Anzalone said. ‘Many times when a new family moves to a community, they want to find out if there-is a good library in the area. The Chamber of Commerce even told me that when a business is relocat- ing to a certain area, they want to know about its cultural benefits, like churches and libraries.” According to Anzalone, he was approached about the job when Florence Crump, also an active member and supporter of the library, spoke to him about it in’church. I have a very soft spot in my heart for Florence Crump,” he said with a laugh. “I just can’t say no to her.” Anzalone’s job is a very demanding one at that. He must secure people to chair each individual department such as refreshments, parking, antiques, and publicity. He must also call meetings once a week to see how everything is progressing. “We meet every Wednesday night at the library,” said Anzalone. “Each chair- person reports on his or her department. If there’s work to be done, and I can’t do it myself, I have to see that someone else does it. “The bulk of the work,” he added, ‘is been extremely helpful.” Anzalone claimed that this year’s goal is to net around $50,000. “It is vital that not only the Back Mountain residents, but also all Luzerne County residents attend and support this year’s auction,” he said. ‘‘The expenses to make the transition from the old building to the new building will be great.” The auction will be held at the library auction grounds near the library on July 5-8.
