West team coach Flossie Finn said it was a great experience for her. “It’s the third time I have coached the West team and I believe this year was the best of the three,” Finn said. “It was good to coach ‘my own girls for the last time. “The girls place a lot of value on the game and many of them sacri- ficed a lot to get to practice and to play. We never had as good a turnout as we did this year, all but two of the 18 girls were there. We had a super crowd for the game. That’s the way it should be.” Finn said she and George McCutcheon founded the Kiwanis game. 3 “McCutcheon was in the barber shop when I was talking to my such. a game,’ the Lehman coach said. McCutcheon said he thought Dallas Kiwanis could sponsor such a game. He looked into it and the next year - 1979 - we played the first game. “It’s ironic, that year there were five Lake-Lehman girls on the team . gis Wie Keystone coaches and Lake-Lehman had won the Dis- trict Conference,” Finn added. “Now five years later, it’s the same pattern - five girls and we're dis- trict champs.” McCutcheon said that for years the boys teams got all the attention, but the girls got no recognition. “Since we’ve been sponsoring this game, I believe the girls get a lot of personal satisfaction. They" know they ‘have earned recognition and many have received scholarships because often the game is scouted. Throughout the year the various schools hear about some of he girls but don’t get a chance to scout them. This end of the season game gives them an excellent opportunity. i There’s no way of knowing how far- reaching it is. McCutcheon said it also gives the girls one more opportunity to meet each another, perhaps for the last time. It is also the last chance for all the seniors to play with other girls of similar ability. “The game also encourages more girls to try out for softball next year,” said McCutcheon. West took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, runs Coach Pinn considered unearned because the girls were used to the field. , “I’m glad we scored five more, because they were earned runs said Finn. “It was a well playea game. The pitchers did a good job but the girls were powerful at the plate.” The Keystone State Games Region II qualifying meet will be held Friday and Saturday, June 29 and 30, at Meyers Stadium, Wilkes- Barre.
