Dallas Junior High School students were
prepared to continue their battle to retain David
Jiunta as their social studies feacher at the June
11 school board meeting.
Mark Richardson planned to present the board
with petitions requesting the retention of Jiunta.
The students have a petition signed by nearly
students and several other petitions signed
Y parents and taxpayers asking the board
members to rescind their vote at the May
meeting to deny tenure to Jiunta and dismiss
him pending a hearing. The directors’ vote by a
7-2 majority followed a recommendation by the
Dallas District superintendent Richard Shipe.
Jiunta, who has been a member of the junior
high faculty for nearly two years, received a
satisfactory evaluation for the'academic year
1982-83, but for 1983-84 his performance was
termed unsatisfactory by members of the
administration. Jiunta also has served as junior
high track and cross country coach for two
seasons and received excellent evaluation for
each season of his coaching from Robert Cicon,
junior high athletic director.
meeting, a majority of junior high students and
parents have made a concerted effort to have
the board reconsider its vote and instead grant
Jiunta an extension of time as a teacher and, if
members of the education committee believe it
necessary, have someone work with Jiunta to
help him improve classroom skills.
Several parents of students said that Jiunta
works well with their children, shows a genuine
problems.
John Johnson, president of ‘the Dallas Educa-
tion Association, told The Dallas Post he hoped
the board would approve a resolution at the June
11 meeting to reverse its previous action, thus
eliminating the need for the students action.
Jiunta received a standing ovation from the
students at an assembly held June 7 in the junior
high auditorium. The students also attempted a
walkout on Thursday as a show of support for
Jiunta, but they were prevented from carrying it
out by members of the junior high administra-
tion. Many parents question the district policy
which allows the board to first dismiss a teacher
or coach and then allow that individual a
hearing.
«Jt seems backward to me,” said the mother
of one student, who requested her name be
withheld for fear of reprisal on the part of
administrators. “I believe a teacher or coach
should first have a hearing before the education
or activities committee and then the case be
presented before the entire board for action. The
way that it is done presently gives too much
opportunity for personality clashes or politics to
intervene.”
Since the board’s action in May, several
directors have indicated they may have acted
hastily and are interested in reconsidering the
case.
It appears to many that Jiunta gives the
students first priority and, if lack of experience
is his only weakness, he deserves a chance to
prove that, with someone’s help, he can become
an excellent teacher. :
Attempts to contact principal Daniel Poorman
on Friday were unsuccessful as he was attend-
ing committee meetings. Neither Dr. William
Camp, chairman of the education committee,
nor Donald Jones, chairman of the personnel
committee, could be contacted by telephone at
press time.
“I hope the entire matter is resolved at the
June meeting,” said John Johnson. “I hate to
see any more media spotlights on the Dallas
District. We have a good school and good
students; it’s a shame there has been so much
bad publicity recently. Most of it is unnecessary
and is doing the students, faculty and adminis-
tration a grave injustice.”
