DENMON Staff Correspondent Lake-Lehman girls’ softball team scored four runs in the first inning against Wallenpaupack in the open- ing round of interdistricts last Tues- day, but two key errors by the Lady Knights in the final three frames ended their chances for a try for the state title. The Lady Knights jumped on Wal- lenpaupack’s Buckhorns right away and the first inning went just like textbook theory. But the Buckhorns came back in the bottom half of the first with a run and added two more in the second to bring the score to 4- wo The tying run came in the fourth on an error by the Knights and an overthrow in the sixth put the Buck- horns in front 5-4 where the score remained. _ The Knights had an opportunity to tie it up in the seventh when pitcher | Jill Solinski hit a triple to center- | field with two out. Lori Pantle came in to run for Jill but never scored because Sandy Dicton flied out to center field to end the game. “The better team didn’t win,” said Coach Flossie Finn. ‘They may have been the better team last Tuesday because they won, but I'd like the chance to play them again. “I've replayed that game over and over but I don’t believe I would do anything any different than I did. The season shouldn’t have ended that way, but the girls gave it their best. fault,” the Lehman coach added. “It takes an entire team with good offense and defense. I was never happy that league officials didn’t force GAR to play Thursday as scheduled. We should never had had to play two consecutive days. It gave us not time for any scouting report. On Monday, they routed Bishop O’Hara 12-0 to take the District 2 champion- ship. They're a great team and I still say a better team than Wallen- paupack. It’s too bad one game has to decide who advances in the play- offs.” Finn said Monday’s win over Bishop O’Hara, getting psyched up for it, then playing again the next day made it difficult to get up again. “But Jill (Solinski) was fantastic. Two consecutive days didn’t hurt her. I didn’t have a backup who could pitch anywhere near as well as she can. Beth (Finn) is a fresh- man and doesn’t have enough con- trol. She pitched in a number of yz games when we knew we co¥ absorb the walks such as Hazleton, Tunkhannock and finsihed against Wyoming Seminary. She needs another season, but she throws a fast ball, she’s confident and gutsy. “What will next season be like without Jill? We'll see - I'm confi- dent we will be a winning team, we may even take another title. We had six of nine girls on the first All Star team. Five of those graduated but Cindy Slocum, our power hitter will be back. Kelly Wandel, Sandy Dicton, Beth Finn and Pam Solinski were on the second team. They’ll all be back. We’ll have to absorb some of Beth’s walks because she’s young. Lori Lopasky will be back and Kelly Siglin, a freshman, did a great job catching for Beth this year. “That gives us a good nucleus. We had 32 kids on the bench this year and their attitude is great. They're looking forward to meeting the chal- lenge What are you going to do when these kids graduate? They want to follow in their footsteps, not fade into the shadows. They are great bunch of kids and I’m looking forward to next season. Who knows there may be some kids from the next year. ” * Pregnancy Terminations to 14 Weeks e Confidential Pregnancy Counseling ® One Visit & Follow-Up Office of Salomon Epstein, M.D. Tim 17 DOTS SCS Binghamton Plaza 607-772-8757 te
