Parade.
Dallas Post/Ed Campbell
College Misericordia celebrated
its 58th commencement exercises on
Saturday on the south lawn of the
Dallas campus. Two hundred and
twenty five men and women
received the following degrees:
associate in applied science, bache-
lor of arts, bachelor of music, bach-
elor of science, bachelor of science
in nursing, bachelor of social work,
master of science in human services
administration, and master of sci-
ence in nursing.
The Honorable George M. Leader,
former Governor of Pennsylvania,
presented the commencement
address to the class of 1984. Leader
recalled his own graduation from
the University of Pennsylvania in
1939, when he became the first
Leader in eight generations to
receive a baccalaureate degree.
“I believe that your parents will
want you to remember your roots,”
your, heritage and try to live up to
the high -expectations.that.your
family has for you.”
Morsignars Andrew; ul.-MeGowan,
chairman-of: College-Misericordia’s
‘board of trustees, conferred an hon-
orary doctor of laws degree upon
Governor Leader, in recognition of
his distinguished service to the
State of Pennsylvania, to education
and to humankind.
An honorary doctor of humane
letters degree was awarded to
Sister Mary Maurita Sengelaub,
R.S.M., senior advisor to the presi-
dent of the Sisters of Merch Health
Corporation in Farmington Hills,
Michigan.
Dr. James J. Pallante, academic
dean of the College, presented the
227 degree candidates; Misericor-
dia’s president, Dr. Joseph R. Fink,
conferred the degrees.
Cheryl L. Jones, Scott Street,
Wilkes-Barre was recognized with
several awards. A summa cum
laude graduate of the music therapy
program, Ms. Jones received the
Alumni Award for scholarship, the
Julia Janice Koons Bonin Award for
proficiency in music, and the Music
Therapy Award for professional
growth in music therapy. She was

uate Honor Society. Ms. Jones sang
the National Anthem at the opening
of the commencement convocation.
Other Wilkes-Barre residents hon-
ored with special awards include
Mary Beth A. Kollesar, Madison
Street, who received the Sister
Mary Kateri Dowart Award for
excellence and leadership in nurs-
ing; Don C. Kemmerer, Andover
Street, recipient of the Rho-Tau
Award for clinical excellence in
and Susan
Marie Stilp also of Andover Street
in Wilkes-Barre, received the Dr.
Tatjana Petrychenko Award for out-
standing achievement in Biology.
Carmen N. Chiumento, of North
Main Street in Plains, was recog-
nized for earning the highest grade
point average in the class of 1984.
Mr. Ciemento earned a 3.98 aver-
age, on a scale of 4.0.
The new graduates heard
remarks by Margaret H. Spengler,
president of College Misericordia’s
J
noted that “this present moment,
this moment of your graduation is
holy--for out of it your future
emerges. Fill your future with a
love for life and you will discover
the essential elements for happi-
ness.”
The Most Reverend J. Carroll
McCormick, former Bishop of
Scranton, offered the benediction at
the conclusion of the commence-
ment ceremonies.
